Which? report on MG4 lane keep assist issues reported by This Is Money

Just returned from trip to France, my wife being slightly disabled means at toll booths
I have to get out and run around to collect ticket or pay. Each time LKA defaults back
to ON, Also on the long drive if I lift my bum of the seat it defaults to ON.
Question if I could short out the seat sensor so it thinks I'm in my seat would this
solve the problem or create more issues ???
Shorting anything would be a high risk.

This is effectively the switch to turn the car on, so if you forced it on, it would never turn off, which wouldn't be a good idea.

I suppose in theory you could install a manual toggle switch, but anything like this would probably invalidate a lot of the warranty.

I don't think using the seat is a great idea for on/off, generally a manual button is better and I really don't see what this add to the car (as well as being annoying in other use cases).

Did the dealer do that?

Btw, after alignment of the wheels a calibration is also supposed to performed (it is in the manual)

You could try getting your wife to press firmly at the the back of your seat, to keep pressure on it, while you bob out (if she is able) ?

The simplest quick solution to these particular incidences of this annoyance is to buy a toll tag - but obviously only if you drive through France at all frequently, that is. One of the best things I ever did.

Has anyone heard any more on the promised fix for LKA from MG? The original Which? article was several months ago and once again MG appear to have avoided the issue.

Tbh there has been a electric power steering update so I wonder if that's when mine went from a yank to a nudge

What is the current official release of the phase 2 Trophy software? My dealer is telling me that R40 is the latest. I am hoping for some improvements as I am having bother with LKA but otherwise I don't have any other software issues that I have noticed.

I came from r40 and r46 lka is much milder. Also, in ELK mode sensors 'see' the markers better. However, the errors increased as well like pulling you to the middle when it should not.

Btw, the mg4 gets confused when dashed lane markers come at a shortened distance. It then sees them as a solid line. That explains one of my horror experiences ....

After an exchange of emails with the dealer (who seemed unaware of the problems) and MG UK but I'm still waiting! I have even sent the dealer a video showing the nudge to the centre of the road problem recurring at the same location.

Seems the DVSA aren't happy with the situation but it's not bad enough for a recall

Good morning,

Thank you for getting in contact,

MG Motor UK is finalising a software enhancement for customers which will be approved by the relevant authorities who have been cooperating with closely.

Customers will be contacted shortly by their MG dealer but to be clear this upgrade has not been classed as safety related and is designed to improve the driver experience.

Thank you,

I am wondering does "not safety related" just mean...

1. we don't need to actively pursue customers to upgrade
OR
2. we are not liable if something goes wrong
OR
3. You have to pay for this upgrade?

It's 1. Basically relieves them of the responsibility to ensure, rather than recommend, everyone has it. Probably with a bit of 2. too. If you opt not to have it then it's on you, not them.

Just to remind everyone that the R** number refers to the infotainment software version NOT to any of the other modules software versions ?

LKA is defined as a "driver assistance" system. Such systems are not considered mandatory safety systems and can be turned off. Mandatory safety systems (eg ABS) cannot be disabled.

There's a debate going on as to whether *EuroNCAP / the EU is going to require more of these systems to be considered "safety" systems in future. If this happens, we will no longer be able to turn them off.

*The UK still participates even though not in the EU, so we get the same requirements as other countries but often without the legal basis behind them.
