Hi. I have a Zappi WiFi-controlled charger and when charging my MG5 Trophy direct from solar panels, the charging starts and then at some point cuts out.

I raised with Zappi/MyEnergi and got the following reply.

It looks like when the car is charging with solar and the sun goes behind a cloud etc the charge will stop and then try to start again but it looks like your car doesn't like the stop-start of this setup.

I assume this response is in part based on Zappi remotely checking my device, which I had authorized.

Have others found that a passing cloud has this effect on an MG5 or other MG EVs when charging directly from solar?

I would appreciate replies stating which model/s you have had experience of.

What tariff are you on?
The 5 doesn't like the on off so it is best to move the leaf slider. So it pulls from the grid until the sun comes back.

Yes I had the exact same issue, the Zappi requires a minimum of 1.4kw/h to charge the car, so if it is only set to charge on solar surplus and the sun goes in, it cuts the charge. After it happens a couple of times the car refuses to accept any further charge.

However as Jomarkh asked, what Electricity and FIT/SEG tariff are you on? If you can access a cheaper overnight electricity tariff it would make sense to charge your car that way and export any surplus solar to the grid.
