My ZS EV is going to my local dealer for its 4 year / 40,000 mile service tomorrow (it's just clicked over 20,000 miles). To cut a long story short, I spoke to them to confirm the cost - it's £142. I asked them to confirm what they would do for that money (whilst I was looking at the MG service details). They confirmed that they would change the pollen filter and top up the washer fluid.

Clearly £142 is a lot of money for something that I can do myself. It is what it is though and that's just the warranty tax. The dealer advised me that if I don't get it serviced by them, my warranty would not be valid.

Some people may want to pay MG to do these jobs for them but for those (like me) who don't, should have the option to replace a filter and top up screen wash themselves. Surely topping up the screen wash is a user activity anyway!

So, just for fun, I'm posting the photo below on this forum. I'll be checking tomorrow to make sure my blue pen mark is missing from the pollen filter!

4th service is one of the major ones, from memory... That's 4th annual or 65k service. Check other threads for service tasks, I think they also change battery coolant

I had a look on the MG UK web site to see what should be included. As my car’s only just clocked over 20,000 miles, I reckon it should be the low mileage plan.
The service rep confirmed to me that they will change the pollen filter and top up the screen wash only.

If I’m lucky, I may get a ‘free’ car wash and vac! ?

call another MG garage and ask for low mileage quote

Your dealer is talking BS. Any authorised independent garage can carry out the service. The only thing you lose is the MG Assist.

Good idea but too late. It's having MOT too and only got a few days before that's due.

I think in future I'll get an independent to do it. I think there's a HEVRA garage not too far away - I'll speak to them.

There's also this;

When I took my ZS in for second year service I topped up washer fluid to the brim. Thy still tried to charge my £2.99 for washer fluid on the bill.

Update: My car had its service and MOT yesterday. Total cost (inc VAT) was £186.49. Looks like the cost of the service ended up at £132 including the pollen filter and screen wash. I've checked and they have replaced the pollen filter - so that's something I guess!

I didn't get a battery capacity reading or tyre tread measurements though and have nothing about MG Assist - which I assume is roadside recovery.

Apologies if this has been discussed before but it's annoyed me to spend so much money on something that I can easily do myself. Clearly, my irritation should be directed to MG as they set the service schedule and then the dealers need to follow that schedule (accepting that any garage can do it really).

It seems to me that MG are trying to placate dealerships by setting a service schedule for BEVs that many people could undertake themselves. Having their dealer network compete the services allows them to maintain their main revenue stream - servicing. £132 for a replacement filter and topping up my screen wash sticks a bit. To be fair to them, they should have lubricated locks, read error codes and checked many things - if the check sheet is to be believed.

I'd be more comfortable with manufacturers saying you need to change your pollen filter but giving you the option of either doing it yourself or paying your main dealer to do it if you are unable or unwilling to do yourself.

Rant over!

Tesla works like that - you can replace the filters etc. with any garage, but their software updates are all done OTA.

In MG's case, the only thing I can think of is to make sure the software updates are applied for safety reasons, and to check on any known issues/recall type of things.

The MG dealer should have renewed your MG Assistance ( A.A. ) cover for another year after you have paid for your service work.
I would strongly recommend that you leave it a few days and then ring MG Assistance and check if your cover has been updated (y).
No - It is NOT the basic roadside assistance, that is sometimes offered via car insurance companies and some bank accounts.
It is the fully breakdown cover, offering relay / recovery ( if required ) and home visits.
This surely has to be factored in your decision making process, if you do want to consider going third party as alternative.
Third party servicing is fine and your warranty should not be compromised, as long as they or yourself, remember to use genuine MG OEM parts ( so no cost savings being had here then ).
You could purchase a OEM filter and then install it yourself prior to the service ?.
But the cost saving on the labour will be very minimal here.
Plus only the MG dealer has access to the software for applying any official updates / recalls.

Yep, our other car is a Tesla. They provide recommendations as to when to replace filters etc and have detailed instructions and videos for you to change your own filters etc. There's no service history to maintain as such.

Cheers. I'll call MG Assistance and check. If I'm paying for it, I want to know that it's there and how to use it!

Here you go.
Put this number in your phone and you're all sorted.

Give the AA a call with your reg number ask them to check dealer has registered your car.

I tried that and it wasn’t registered and after about 7 or 8 phone calls between MG, AA, and myself we were fast getting nowhere and then MG in Weston-Super-Mare were suddenly disenfranchised and they stopped answering the phone anyway.

Another poster said recently that MG delivers the 'dream' of a product and service as opposed to the actual product and service - so true!
