Had the ZS EV long range for a few months and it's a lovely car but on a few occasions it's now not charged at public charges.

It didn't charge at an Instavolt charger a few months ago but put that down to my inexperienced of charging. Yesterday it didn't charge at a pod point and today was a connected kurb both show as been used recently.
Tried locking the car unlocking it, starting the engine, turning it off, but nothing would work.
What else can I try or do I need to take it to the dealership.

Just to add it does work at some public chargers so it's not all and my home charger is fine

I think that there is at least a small chance that your Electric Vehicle Charge Controller ECU is faulty. There seems to be some evidence of a hangover from the chip shortage days.

Perhaps do a forum search on EVCC.

Exactly the same happened to me. They shouldnt be delivering cars to customers like this. It's like the equivalent of delivering a car that can't be filled with fuel.

Take it to the dealer asap. Upside is that you should also get the Tesla incompatibility fix whilst they are sorting it as likely they'll have to run the updates.

Thank you. It's a 22 plate but I only bought it in April/May I think. Do you know if there is a cost if I take it to anMG dealership?

The warranty covers the paint and HV system for 7 years other bits for 3 years and some standard ICE parts for a year. Was it purchased from a MG dealer?

They can't deliver a car that doesn't work to you and expect you to pay for it. I'd say it was 100% warranty. I paid nothing when they fixed mine.

It was purchased from cars2 MG

7 years is on body anti-perforation only (then subjected to annual inspection /service).
I think you are reading that warranty document wrong. The list of exceptions are for items that are more wear and tear. The 7 year warranty is 💯 NOT just body only.

It's likely irrelevant anyway. The car appears to have been provided to the OP back in April/May, and consumer rights would likely be on the OPs side on this one if it could be proved the fault existed at the time of sale.

Regardless of Warranty there are basic contract consumer rights that apply for 6 years from date of purchase - if the fault makes the car unusable (which this does) you should be able to insist that the Seller puts it right

I'm a bit surprised that the discussion has dived immediately into equipment failures, warranties and consumer rights, without any suggestions of less extreme and difficult to follow routes to try first.

It's not especially unusual for cars to fail to connect to chargepoints. It's better now than it was when we first started four or five years ago, but it still happens.

This might be because of a problem with the ChargePoint. If so, there's nothing you can do, except go somewhere else. Even if has been working on another car.

Things you can try are:
  • Check that the ChargePoint is properly and completely cleared down from the previous customer. A surprising number of people seem to wander off before following all the steps, leaving the point in limbo.
  • Make absolutely sure that you followed the instructions on the ChargePoint about what to do and in what order. They differ, particularly in the order of events, sometimes and some are finicky about it.
  • Unplug and reinsert the ChargePoint plug into the car charging port.
  • Check that both the ChargePoint plug and the car's port are clean and dry. Especially the former, as some people just drop them on the floor rather than put them back in the holster, so they could be in any state.
  • Make sure the connector is firmly inserted and fully home
  • If there's more than one charger on the site, try another one if possible.
You're going to be struggling with many dealers if you just walk in and say that your car charges at home and on some public points, but not others, so it must be an car fault/warranty issue. They know as well as any of us that the UK charging infrastructure is not problem free. (France's is much the same, but I have no further experience.) The setup protocols between car and ChargePoint are more complicated than opening a fuel flap and sticking a nozzle in! Sadly.

So make sure there really is a problem before you get yourself stressed up. But if it starts getting worse, act before you can't recharge the car at all!

This may seem like an silly suggestion but have you checked that the charge timer is off and that you aren't trying to charge outside of the hours set if it is on.

Hello,
Yes I have I tried a charger yesterday and it didn't work again but the Jag before it did

Thank you. I'm booking it in for the service and will mention it then as it happened again on a charger brand I haven't heard of. There were 3 other cars charging, mine wouldn't, and I even moved to another charger which had worked for another car so something isn't right.
It works on some chargers which is strange but not all.

That doesn't apply to rapid charging

The OP specifically said they have tried 'public chargers' and has had no success with any.

I disagree with your assertion on the difficulty getting the dealer to do something.

I had exactly the same issue with mine when it was delivered new, and the dealer took it for a day fixed and tested it without complaint.

Let the dealer sort it out, these things should just work, it shouldn't be this hard.

The OP in fact said that it did work at "some public chargers, so it's not all", hence my concern that they could run into grief.

There's a world of difference between not charging at any public charger at all, which is a critical failing, and having intermittent problems at some, which is an annoyance.

And one sadly suffered by many EV drivers I've spoken to. Which may be nothing to do with the car.

There have been issues with the EVCC modules in the past that caused these intermittent charging problems. But we're well past Covid now, and I think that parts shortages would have eased by now. Perhaps this car is one of the last to use the unreliable EVCC module.
