What ranges are you getting from a full charge (MG4 SE)

I'm interested if a few people can log here what sort of real-world distances they are achieving on the SE version (not the Long Range) from the point of a full charge to any low-level battery warning being activated. I appreciate that there are variables such as temperature, environment, conditions etc.

Motorway and non-motorway ranges would be useful to know.

Many thanks

I’m sure that you’ll get takers to log their range.
Most will not actually complete the range because they will charge well before they get to the low end of the battery.
You’ll also get predicted range quoted, which whilst it has some relevance, is not necessarily any indication of what you really will achieve.
However, getting numbers posted is not that meaningful without applying some clear guidelines. Just a few thoughts below.
If you are going to do it I would suggest;
The average miles/kWh achieved on the distance achieved.
The average speed logged on the distance achieved - this is key.
The outside temperature - another key stat
The drive modes/regen used
Items in use - heater being a major influence.
After extensive number crunching I would bet that the only clear picture is;
EV’s don’t perform that well in cold weather
EV’s prefer slow town work and high motorway speed s significantly reduces range.
The published range is seldom achieved or even actually attempted by the majority of owners.

Yes I appreciate all the factors and variables. It's meaningful to me to get a broad indication of real-world ranges and that's all I want or need it to be.

This forum thankfully seems to have an accurate representation of range, some forums and Facebook groups (of all makes) seem to have owners getting some incredible efficiency.
Which potentially they would really struggle to get this time of year

I have a spreadsheet on my website that could be used to track range/efficiency etc. (The website has the master - I'm using a personal copy for myself).

I wonder how many EV drivers actually drive the car using it’s performance and enjoy it?
I drive my cars to obviously get about, but also to enjoy driving them and to get somewhere within a reasonable timeframe. The instant power and driving experience of an EV is something to be enjoyed - not scrimping and saving every hypermile (unless you really really have to).

For example - I always drive at 70(ish) on motorways and unrestricted dual carriageways where it’s safe to do so. I drive at 60 on unrestricted single track roads - again when safe.
I stick to 30 limits.

For example, I see a lot of owners saying they get upwards of 4miles/KwHr on the motorway in winter - rubbish! If you drive at 70 (for a longer period of time so that you actually average close to 60-70) in normal mode with heating on you have no chance of getting anywhere near this! If you get close to 3miles/KwHr it’s some sort of miracle!

Calculating your real world range is not difficult. If you know that on a motorway in winter you will average 2.5m/KwHr and have a usable battery pack of 60kwhr you’ll get (just) 150miles if you take it down to the bone.

I prioritise performance over range.
Well I would if the car would let me (see my other thread about restricted speed)…
Range is of no real concern to me, it’s just a commuting/town tool.

It will get sorted

Couldn't agree more, all this driving at snails pace just to get .5 more is a nonsense. If EV's are ever to be sold to the vast majority of the driving public, trundling along at 10-15mph below speed limits everywhere you go is not going to be it's biggest selling point

I'd rather not be caught up in traffic all the time but that's just the reality of living in South Essex
the nerdy part of me likes to do the maths at the moment but that will undoubtedly wear off !
My SR was showing 98% and 235 miles on eco mode this morning.
now shows 84% and 202 after a 27 mile drive
little bit of a.c now and again.
20 mph average
around 9 degrees
Light rain

pretty good I think

Mine currently shows 92 miles with 56% remaining (equivalent to 164 miles range) ... and I'm happy with that (3.2 mpkWh) for this time of year and current conditions. :)

On the 2nd of Jan I drove 110 miles and the range indicated 76 miles remaining. Pretty much on most of my journeys the estimated range is 180 miles and for me this is accurate. Today the weather has been 12 degrees and my estimated range is 190 miles. I've no doubt this will go above 200 in the Spring

We have to 'educate' ICE drivers and show them that EVs are not driven by aged dodderers! ?

The “dodderers” is an elite society, open to all (if they’re lucky), with compulsory entry and gradual loss of marbles being key to successful enjoyment.

Prior to switching to electric I used to enjoy hypermiling my ICE cars, and still often enjoy doing it now. Engine off coast, bump start and pulse and glide where all things I would be doing regularly trying to get another 0.1mpg in my commute.

However, I want to do it because I feel like it, not because I have to in order to make it to a charger etc. This was the problem with the leaf we had before. With the MG4 your just as likely to see me blasting past you at 70+ as you are passing me stalking a lorry.

Whichever camp you fall into is fine by me. :)

Interesting although not sure about engine off and coasting in an ICE car. The brake servo will loose its power and the power steering won't work. You could also be in trouble if you have an accident and it's deemed you weren't in full control of the car.

Agreed. You do get enough pressure for one complete stop and provided your not steering the lack of power assistance is not a problem. It's still a stupid thing to do. Fortunately it's not something you have to worry about in an EV.
