Hi everyone,

I'm new to electric vehicles and having trouble getting my scheduled charging to work overnight on my Ohme Pro charger. In the app, there seems to be two entirely separate places to schedule, and these can be set to different times. On the main app homepage, I can select 'change target'and in the burger menu, if I select 'my charger', I can set a schedule too. I tried setting both to charge to 75% by 5:30am in the morning, the one in the burger menu starts the same but the main homepage one automatically changes to something else. Both are set to only charge at off peak prices (I'm on intelligent octopus, giving cheaper electricity between 11:30pm and 5pm.).

The charging doesn't seem to start as scheduled. Tonight, I unlocked then locked my car, and the charging started.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

David.

You need to disable the cheap tariff, and just say an end time you want your charge finished by I have it at 0600hrs, as below.

The Ohme app’s price cap should be turned off, or it needs to be set above your peak unit rate. If it's set below this, your smart charging schedules won't be as smart as they could be.
While you can have multiple charging schedules in the Ohme app, we suggest only having one active schedule; Intelligent Octopus will do the hard work in the background.
You need to set an active schedule in the Ohme app for the time you want your EV charged by, ideally between 4am - 11am. If you don't do this, the Ohme charger will default to 'dumb' charging and you'll be paying a higher rate to charge your EV.

Thanks for the info. I'll try without the tariff cap set. The app does seem to know that the 10p/kWh rate is what I have, and is between 11:30pm and 5:30am, so I'm surprised that causes a restriction. I'll try setting it above that first, then try not setting it at all.

Should I be setting the schedule in the burger menu option for 'my charger', or on the home screen of the Ohme app?

Thanks again!

I just do it all on the app, no cap on price charged by 0600hrs, just plug it in and it does the rest

I'm in the same situation as you, but haven't had any issues.
Intelligent octopus, schedule in my charger set to +70% by 8am or whatever, but with the only charge at lower rate thing enabled.
It won't do +70% in one night but it does charge overnight between 11:30 and 5:30. A popup comes up letting me know charging target has been changed because it will run out of time, and that's when I've gone into the "change target" area of the app and adjusted things, but I'm not sure if that's a saved schedule or a one off schedule.

When I was using my original Ohme EVSE it didn't like have two schedules set for the same start time.
Have you got any timers set in the car?
Nothing in the car, ohme speaks to intelligent and it sorts everything out.
I don't have a schedule, just a time to finish by that's technically a schedule I suppose, no start time however

I think I understand better now. Thanks everyone. So the scheduling section in the 'my charger' section in the burger menu sets the schedule and the main app homepage just reflects the current schedule, but that can be changed 'in the moment' as it were, via 'change target'.

I've set the schedule, with no cap, and it looks like it's scheduled to start ramping up the charge from 11:30pm. As you say, just handling it without the cap needed.

Fingers crossed for a successful charge tonight! I'll report back.

Success! Charging as scheduled was smooth last night. Started around 11:30pm. The only odd part was that it charged to 100% instead of the 90% that was on the schedule. But I'm not complaining. Better than a dead battery.

Thanks for your help everyone!

It's not smart enough to know the battery level. So it adds +90%. If you go into the MG ismart app you can set the maximum charge level in there (small arrow on the battery graphic)

It is smart enough and if you are using the ohme with octopus intelligent you can't use your car app, it needs to just be between octopus and ohme, my car charges to 80% when I set it to that

I was under the impression Ohme wasn't integrated with the MG API yet, so the car controls the maximum charge level.
At least my Ohme app doesn't show me the current charge level of the car, only what it intends to add, based on it's knowlege of the make and model, and hence battery capacity.
It says "+80%, +216mi" in my schedule, If the MG app/car allows then it will probably hit 100% in the session.

I'm talking about ohme and octopus intelligent only, unsure if you are, I don't use anything with my car, I just say 80% by 0600hrs and it does everything itself.
Maybe different as I have a Mégane etech my ohme app does show the current charge level and range of my car. I can even control my climate control from it.

Mégane?! A little confusing on the MG4 forum. Yes ohme and intelligent octopus.

I did have one on order (long story) I would still consider getting one as a second car, hence hanging about here to see if they can get things sorted.
Also the debates and banter are way better here than on the Megane forum.

Plus I'm on commission from Renault for how many MG customers I can poach, up to about 6 now?

Final update I think/hope. And I think I've cracked it. If I set the schedule after the car is finished being used for the day, the schedule works. If I set the schedule and then use the car, the schedule doesn't charge. No idea why, but I've tested it and confirmed. This came from a friend who has a different smart charger and car (but is also on intelligent octopus though).

Certainly sounds "wrong" so I hope it becomes more sensible. Schedule wise I've gone for set and forget. It will always put in as much as possible at the cheap rate on intelligent, If it's plugged in over night.

Here's the description of how the schedules work in the app, if you click the ? On the page with your schedules it says this:

I tried this last night and it started charging immediately at peak rate when I disabled cheap tariff. I assume because it was assuming the car had an empty battery as it cannot see the battery charge state. When I enabled the cheap tariff, it worked correctly and only charged during the cheap time.

Agreed.

The alternative is to have a target that's low enough to do in 6 hours, if we're really after the eco good feels of intelligent grid balancing, rather than just cheap charging.
That way ohme will know it can achieve your goal in the cheap hours and wait, unless told otherwise by octopus.

Lots of assumptions but that makes sense to me!
