Hi, is there any way that MG can be persuaded to issue a software update that allows you to fold the mirrors at any speed. At the moment if yiu fold them below 10 mph they unfold above that speed. If above 10 mph they won't fold. EVERY OTHER CAR that I have driven that has folding mirrors allows you to fold them and keep them folded at any speed. They are expensive to replace and this seems non-sensical

Out of interest, why do you want the folded at speed?

BMW and VW ( so I guess any cars in the VAG group ) all have the electric doors mirrors linked to a speed sensor.
Not unlike the NO safe belt warning.
Both are triggered / activated when the car reaches above about 20 MPH.
It’s a good safety procedure I think.
I am puzzled why you would want to travel on say the motorway with your mirrors still folded to be honest ?.
It is this way to comply with the law I would suggest.
If your door mirrors are retracted, then you are only have use of the rear view from your central interior mirror on the windscreen.
I think the intention was to allow you to folded them, in order help when backing out of a garage and not leave them on the floor, when they got caught on the frame of the garage door !.

I live in a place where there are narrow lanes with granite walls. Typically with my other car when yiu are approaching such places you fold in your mirrors to save a £300 bill. Why would MG not give the owner the choice as all other manufacturers to who provide the functionality

I don’t think all manufacturers provide that functionality. I can’t think of a car that I’ve owned that did it. If you’re so close to each other when passing - your speed should be very low anyway ?

I don't think 11mph is too fast. I imagine the cars that yiu mention didn't have electrically folding mirrors. Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, Vauxhall, Citroen to name just a few of the cars I've owned all do

I wouldn’t have mentioned them if they didn’t have folding mirrors - that would be silly ?. I hope that you find a solution.

I understand your situation totally.
But if I was that close to a granite wall that I was relying on the extra 7 inches that my mirrors offered, then that prospect scares me to death !.
I would be drawing in my breath, if it was that close !.
Seven inches closer and you have no side left on your car !!!!!.

It's more the car coming the other way especially Land-rover and Peugeot. The cars continue to get bigger the roads stay the same!

It’s difficult - and it could also be a legislation thing. It seems strange that most (modern) cars don’t seem to allow mirrors to stay folded over a certain speed - however I’m sure some do allow this to be overriden by the driver ?. To change the MG would probably take a software modification. I guess that you could pull them in manually or at least the drivers side. Although I’m not sure if this would cause any motor mechanism damage - and doing it would be a pain anyway. I don’t envy your drive if you have to pass that close on a regular basis! There’s lots on here discussing this if you search door mirrors and wind mirrors etc. Here’s one of the threads ?

I don't think my 2016 Prius mirrors are speed related, I've folded them at 30 mph when some twerp decided to overtake a parked car on his side of the road at speed to try and beat me through the gap I was already in.
It must be a new thing.

I think it depends on how each manufacture decides how they think the mirrors should be controlled.
A 3 series BMW I owned in 1993 had been set up in such a way, that when the car reached above about 20 Mph the door mirrors would automatically fold out, if left in the retracted position when setting off.
You could not retract them yourself, unless you where travelling below 20 Mph.

I can’t see any real safety issue in being able to do this so why not find a good auto electrician, they should be able to sort out easily. Certainly glad I don’t live in your neck of the woods the very thought of such close encounters would send me to the booze cabinet for another stiff drink.

If the side clearance is THAT tight, then I think I would rather sacrifice clipping the door mirror than the though of completely wipe out the enter side of my car !.
When you are that close, you are TOO close in my opinion.

Cars and dual purpose vehicles - after 26 January 2010 must have external mirrors both sides of car. And an internal mirror unless the internal mirror cannot provide an adequate view to the rear.

you can fold at speed, well on the mg5 anyway. you must go into settings and disable autofold. I have narrow lanes near me too, this means however the will not autofold when the car is parked. If I street/supermarket park occasionally I just just fold them manually often only the vulnerable side. Oncoming traffic in and around the lanes is a greater risk for me. Sad though that you can't have both functions as you can on most cars.

I live in a spot where cars park to go to local shops so see most models.
just checked my MG5 SR 2021 against a Range Rover with a 2020 plate top surface of my side mirror is 44 inches from the road, Bottom of the Range Rover mirror is 45 inches from the road so you have an inch to spare in height without retracting either mirrors. Full of useless information!
