MG4 Restricted speed - weird

Think we could be up to about 4 now if macadoodle's isn't a one off

Yes, a few have had it, I think both SR and LR cars IIRC, but it hasn't been many so far. That may be down to driving style.

I'm keen to know what difference Sport mode makes, since that is mentioned as needed in the manual for challenging driving, so the car may behave differently. Bowfer has said he always drives in normal, but perhaps the next time someone gets this problem they can try switching into Sport mode and see if it is any different.

Shouldn't really make a difference (normal/sport) other than maybe eco mode putting some restrictions on power etc

I know it shouldn't but I want to know for sure. The fact that the manual says to use it for challenging driving is surprising and it is worth eliminating this as a factor.

Accelerating up a slip road isn’t challenging driving, I’m not driving over the Lecht.
Besides, as I’ve said, it does it on the flat too.
It just so happens I notice it most on the road I use the most, which just so happens to be up a hill.
Others have reported the same with no mention of hills.

None of which answers my question which was about sport mode.

Sport mode is recommended for ‘challenging driving’
I’m not doing challenging driving.
Therefore selecting sport mode is unnecessary.

What, I dare to put my foot down so I should select sport mode…?
Contrary to any of the scores or other cars I’ve had…?
That’s just making excuses for MG.
 
Now now peeps....perhaps a test to appease enquiries would be welcome by some members even though normal driving should not require "sports mode" ....it's not as if its being driven on a race track or round/up a mountain ? ⛰
What's the harm given its most likely going back Bowfer? Might help others understand the cars limitations....

Those are far more extreme driving conditions than I encounter and although he’s getting the restricted power and speed, he’s getting more than I do.
I’ve had power restricted to well under 50%.
There is evidence the 4 just doesn’t like hills though, which is quite laughable….(but not funny)
 
It would be useful to at least do the problematic trip in sport mode and see what happens...
Exactly, please can someone with this issue just try it out so we can get more information. It isn't rocket science and it is one more thing to try to home in on the problem, which will then help others in the future.

Yes, it isn't unusual with EVs, for years Teslas were famous for not being able to make it around a lap of a track without massive power restriction due to limited cooling. This is why trying a different mode is worth a go even if it would seem unlikely - especially as the manual mentions it which is quite unusual.

MG have built to a low budget, particularly for the SE, so I am totally unsurprised that there are driving conditions that lead to such restrictions. Most drivers may never encounter them. I have not seen any problems reported with hills.

Having your speed severely limited as you have personally experienced (and Macadoodle) is a definite fault and it is possible that driving style might trigger that bug much more often for some than others. This is something you actually said yourself earlier in this thread.

Until MG determine a fix, is only by trying things out that we stand a chance of figuring out what is triggering this issue.

It's a shame the MG4 doesn't have a true power read out like the MG ZS EV MK1 that I also have at home as it shows volts and Amps and would be able to see if there was either a current or voltage collapse indicating a battery issue, or if it holds constant.

There's also the possibility of magnetic saturation occuring which can happen when a motor is at 100% output at high loadings (as would happen on an incline) for an extended period of time if poorly designed, which leads to power loss, until the magnetic flux can break down, IE reduced load on the motor or reducing power to the motor.

A way around this is to inhibit the power input to prevent 100% output in real terms to say 90% to prevent saturation, while still making the majority of the motors capacity available.

Stop focussing on hills.
It does it on the flat too.
