MG ZS missing V2L function

I have been told by my dealer that MG will replace/install the components required to enable v2l on my car. They are awaiting the part to arrive and I will therefore get booked in to fix.

Almost certainly they are likely to replace the EVCC.

Regarding "estimate the build month by labels on the cables": In the EU, you receive a "Certificate of Conformity" that has the exact build date of the car on it. Is there no equivalent to this in the UK?

Yes, we have the same. Maybe some people filed theirs away, and have forgotten!
Mine was built on 19th August 2022, and I received notification that it had arrived at the dealership on 19th November.

I'd therefore recommend anyone who wants this enabling contact their dealer ASAP as I imagine they have a limited number of components left over and anyone complaining will get the fix.

Did you mean it dropped by 0.63 V, i.e. to about 3.78 V? [ Edit: Though I'm basing that expectation on a type 1 circuit; proximity pilot is likely a little different in type 2 vehicles. But if 2000Ω brings the voltage down that low, 470Ω must bring it down very low. ]


That's the spirit! Silicone and spray paint can fix a lot of sins. It's slightly surprising that there aren't any fasteners on a type 2 plug... it's completely moulded to the cable?

With 2k Ohms across PE and PP the potential is 630mV (as measured with a Fluke multimeter having a very high input impedance), so the current flowing is 0.315mA. With no load resistance PP measures +4.41 Volts w.r.t. PE, and a bit of calculation reveals that the source resistor inside the car is exactly 12000 ohms.

I finally finished hacking through the solid plastic moulding with a multi-tool cutter earlier this evening. I temporarily soldered the original mains cable to the plug pins and placed a 2k0 resistor between PE and PE. Well, the car detected the presence of a discharge cable but when I touched 'start' absolutely nothing came out of the 13A socket, which was very disappointing. I'll try again tomorrow when I'm wider awake but I may have to follow ChunkyMonkey's advice and go back to the dealer.

I recently purchased an MG ZS EV LR Trophy Connect and attempted to use the V2L function. I tried various power states for the car, ensure it had decent charge etc however it refuses to start providing power.

I have ordered a different cable for testing purposes but I note that others face an identical issue.

As V2L was one of the motivating reasons for purchasing the car, I am now facing the prospect of returning it to the dealer. It was purchased around 21 days ago although I'm not clear on what constitutes the "purchase" date under consumer law as it could be the date I paid the cash, the date the docs were signed or the date I collected the vehicle (which was the earliest they were able to offer).

I have spoken to my local MG dealer who was not helpful - firstly sending me on a wild goose chase with MG directly, then advising they did not have a genuine MG v2l cable to test with and couldn't see me until the end of July. I wasn't expecting stellar service I suppose but this bordered on hostile.

Any suggestions/advice appreciated.

No problem here, works as expected. I use an inexpensive adaptor from Ali Express, plug straight into the charge port or at the end of a type 2 cable & it lights up with a blue LED, meaning, the car sees it & the infotainment shows ready to go.

I think whether V2L works or not, is going to depend on when your car was manufactured?, all of the folk affected on here have 2023 built cars, and we have tried different cables to make it work without success. If you have a pre 2023 built (as opposed to delivered) car you should be fine, we would expect V2L to work.

Also, the spec's for cars in Oz may be different to the UK.

I'm in Cyprus about to take delivery of a UK spec MG ZS EV Trophy LR. An unregistered June 2022 build car with sunroof was readied for us. Then we were told a Feb 2023 build car with sunroof was available for us, so we switched and were ready to register that one. Yesterday I saw this thread and realised that the 2023 model may not have V2L capability. I took a previously bought V2L (470 ohm resister) adapter to the dealer and tried it on both cars. It did not work with the 2023 model, but was fine with the 2022 model. We have now reverted to registering the 2022 model and will collect on Monday.
Note: MG have changed their website and ZS brochure. They have removed any mention of V2L for the ZS!

Here in the UK you can charge your car 5p/kWh but to run appliances from your house is more than 33p/kWh in some cases.

For the avoidance of doubt my MG5 Trophy's 'Complete Vehicles Certificate of Conformity' shows the date of manufacture as '10/25/2022' and I collected it new from my dealer on 4th July.
I got my modified V2L lead working successfully today (with 2000 ohms between PE & PP) and I've taken some measurements which may be of interest...

With a 500W halogen floodlamp as a load the AC voltage was 218.8 (nominally 220 I suppose). It was well regulated and varied little with differing loads. I was surprised when I plugged in a Kewtech socket tester because it flashed and bleeped permanently to indicate an earth fault. More measurements revealed 83 V between N and E, and 137 V between L & E!

So clearly the PE conductor isn't bonded to Neutral and any earthed metal on a load will be at a different potential to the car's chassis. The resistance between the PE pin and chassis is 11.9 Ohms, rising to 23.4 Ohms when the car is turned off. (I took this reading from the 12V battery negative for convenience because I didn't want to scratch the paint - the bolts securing the bonnet latch are floating.)

The upshot of these readings is that it would be preferable to use double-insulated appliances on the V2L to avoid risk of shock. Ideally I'd like to bond the car's chassis to PE and N but I'm reluctant to do this without seeing a diagram of the invertor and its relationship to the rest of the car's electrics. I'm not prepared to risk doing this and possibly killing some components and invalidating the car's warranty.

Can any forum members corroborate my findings with their own V2L leads?

Tell the dealer to check their notifications from MG. I believe the date it went out was around the 1st July. No, still waiting for part and for it to be booked in so I'd rather folks didn't start bothering them as really this is a matter for the dealer you purchased the car from. They will have had a notification from MG, simple as that. In any case, the details your dealer should need are on this thread so I don't think its fair that competent dealers should be having to carry the can for less competent ones. There is nothing more that my dealer can tell you that is not already on here.
