What is this???

My wild guess: it wants to sample the outside air temperature, to compare with bonnet air temperature, to see if opening the grill will make it hotter or colder. Hence its position in the air stream.

Edit: Slightly confirmed by the story of the flaps opening and closing with the hot air blast.

And there it is!

Why didn't I think of that?

Ex mechanic and everything! ???

Thanks for all the help? Chaps ??

Proper ones over the new ones, but yes.
I had a similar discussion with a motorcyclist yesterday. We were both out for coffee and cake stops, me in my new old British named Chinese MG and he on his new old British named Indian Royal Enfield 350. He was doing a clockwise loop to the coffee shop while I was going anticlockwise on exactly the same route. He was kinda cold and envious of the car - it’s twenty odd years since I was on a bike - nuff said - I was jealous ?. Then he started it up and for a split second I was enraptured by the beautiful even throaty exhaust note - then all the seconds since I’ve wondered why - the noise - the stink of the exhaust gases ? I enjoyed my effortless, silent, cosy swoop back from Crieff. What a fine twisty road. ?

Can’t really compare a 1800kg big hatchback to an under 800kg soft top though. Even with the smell of the exhaust.

Horses for courses.
