MG4 irritations

1. I have the latest update with lane assist, at first I thought this was better because it was smoother and I let it steer for me occasionally nudging the wheel to encourage it not to send me a warning. Great on motorways, however, try the same on D restrictions and it is very uncomfortable, it isn’t dangerous, but you get a vibration, I think it is having a “hissy fit” almost like it knows you are going AI, so won’t give you a smooth ride.
2. I have now had 3 software updates since purchasing in Sept 23, the singular mph on cruise control is the best, but the last one with LA change in the steering wheel coloured symbol was unexpected and quite impressive. I am hoping the next one will clear a SOS fault I still get.
3. I’m also hoping a future update will either fix the speed sign recognition problem or allow a default off!! It thinks all D restrictions are 60 mph whether dual carriageway or not, so irritating, it also misses starts of motorways, sees low speed limit signs on side roads, particularly on motorways and flashes for miles!

If the tech wasn’t there though, I would miss it, it’s ridiculously strange that I’m moaning about stuff I haven’t had on any other cars! Overall, I think the Chinese car is years ahead of others in value for money. I also drive a Mach E and a Corsa electric, both more expensive, obviously the Mach E is superior in every department, but not value for money! The Corsa Electric, don’t bother, more money, less tech and cramped!

Are you sure the side road speeds are sign recognition?
Because I get that using GPS navigation with different platforms.
The GPS isn't accurate enough to know exactly where you are, so you miss the start of motor ways and get side road speed limits.

I definitely get these on my ZS EV Mark 1, from sign recognition. I can see the sign way off to the left that it is seeing.

For me in Australia, my car gets the speed signs right about 95% of the time, so they are quite useful to me.

I think that simply stopping the flashing would be enough for me to start using it again.

Also having the sign go grey or turn off if it hasn't had confirmation of the limit in the last minute would be good. I'm not expecting a fix soon, but hopefully one day.

Yep absolutely sure eg. On M20, I get miles of 30/40 when the recognition sees a sign and the menu names it as sign recognition. If it worked like Waze, I’d be much happier, it also misses obscured signs

Every time I drive past this Shell station on the A19 the car detects the 10mph sign and thinks the limit should be 10mph for miles. Yes the sign is probably badly positioned but....

It probably works is some better managed Highways areas

Have to admit to a bit of novice stupidity here! When we went through new roadworks with a new reduced speed limit. I thought, "Wow the Chinese know everything that's going on". Thought they were using GPS and online traffic data, didn't occur to me it was traffic sign recognition. That makes me feel much better.

Of course it picks up 10mph , it clearly sees a 10mph sign . You can't blame the car for that ! If you don't like it flashing turn it off. Personally I don't mind the flashing and generally it works well. Some of the signs in the UK are either badly positioned or dirty so are unreadable by the camera. It is only an aid , and generally a useful one.

I get 20 miles of "40 mph limit" on the A701 when the car sees a sign informing HGV drivers that the HGV limit is 40 mph. I know EVs are allegedly heavy, but not THAT heavy.

I turn it off.

For me in Austria, being on the opposite side of the planet sign recognition shows wrong limits 98% of the time - complete useless function. Even LKA works a bit better although far away from acceptable.

This is why self driving cars simply won't happen, or at least not in anything like the form Elon Musk thinks. The systems are pretty good at recognising road signs, but having a system capable of interpreting the context of the road sign and determining if it should be obeyed or not is a ridiculously hard problem for a computer to solve but a trivial one for a trained human being. And that's before we even get to the legal issues of responsibility and liability and even the economic ones where you compare the costs of employing a driver vs the costs of the ongoing software development.

Until recently I would be inclined to agree with you, however having seen some of the recent video footage of real world drives with the latest FSD, they are finally making great progress. It will be a long while before we get it in the UK, but USA is not that far off now.

Yeah. I was well impressed. Cars slowing down for potholes, driving up on to the verge to avoid a dangerous driver coming in the opposite direction. A car inching forward in a slow queue of traffic that politely left room for another car to exit a side road and cross in front, then closed the gap, eliciting a wave of thanks from the driver. A car that drove its owner (a diabetic having a hypo attack and a heart episode) 13 miles to hospital through city streets, then parked itself.

I‘m in Austria as well, for me it works fine. Around 90% correct, I guess

I regularly get the "30 MPH limit" as I drive the M1, no idea why but it's not too much of an irritation as I have got to the stage I ignore the speed thing anyway.
We managed to (finally) get the garage to sort the LKA update and it's a real improvement - still get occasional manic twitching from the wheel, but the "suicidal" tendency has gone.

Having driven several other cars with LKA and adaptive cruise control I think the MG4 is a little behind in terms of the cruise control- the best I had was a VW Golf which was really impressive - especially when it decides to brake suddenly. The LKA is (now) actually better than most I've faced - I still wish it had a physical switch for the option - but at least now I don't feel unsafe with it on.

Have to agree the MG4 is great value for money, just wish the dealers would do the updates during the service, without me having to repeatedly ask again and again.

Missing obscured limit signs is a given, as it’s a camera trying to see them. I did get an issue I’d seen reported when I was over in the UK 2 weeks ago - randomly showing 40 as a limit for no apparent reason and something I don’t get at home in Ireland. I’m wondering if it’s interference from roadside radio equipment as we don’t have much of that here?

I had the opposite going over a motorway junction - it read the motorway sign and said the limit was 70!

Will the speed limiter controls coming in soon (UK) use roadsigns and satnav to determine limits. (AKA Intelligent Speed Assist / ISA). If so MG needs to get this right, highway signs need to be clear, and car maps need to be easily and freely updated.
