Shocking shock absobers

Just found out a rear shocker on my MG5 is needing replaced and the warranty for them ran out on the 23/6/24 and is costing £200+ to replace it as it seems they are only covered for 3 years on MGs 7 year warranty.Can anyone tell me if a shocker should pack in after 28000 miles the car has never carried anything heavy apart from me

What are the roads like, where you live? If they're rough that will increase the wear.

The roads are not to bad for potholes over our way.I work Cowdenbeath and bad holes are normally on the passenger side and my faulty shocker is driver side rear.

Sounds like a case bad luck.

It did prompt me to check mine, as the car is in for service on Wednesday, and I'm only about 4000 miles behind you. They seem to be OK, I'm glad to say.

I shall be watching it like a hawk until its third birthday in October. I haven't read the warranty for a while, so I'd better acquaint myself with all the other three-year components, too.

Last failure I had was on my other car at around 10 years old but that was down to pothole damage. Haven't seen indications here of any inherent weakness on the MG5.

I don't live particularly near to that road but I have driven along it! (Once, the road between my home and the coast was closed for "repairs" and the diversion took me that way. )

The linked Sun article doesn't surprise me at all.

Mines on 45k and in for service and MOT end of July (3 years old in September) be interesting to see the results. Will add post after results!

Seems to be only when you think you are covered, then the dealer says pay up. You actually find out.

Having been in the motor trade over 40 years, the rule of thumb is that if its something that is subject to wear and tear through use (brakes, wipers, suspension etc, along with service items) it's generally excluded from warranty cover, unless you can prove it's down to a manufacturing defect - but even then, you'll have a fight! Back in 2001, working for a fleet company I remember a 4k miles, 12 month and 4 day old Astra with a leaking shocker, which Vauxhall wouldn't cover as it was out of 12 month warranty! Finding out MG cover them for 36 months, is a pleasant surprise.
