I apologise for asking a dippy question but in a bit of a bind!
I’m no newbie to EV’s having been driving them for over a decade (scarily!), and we know that granny chargers are a back up option unless you rarely use the car. We always use the dual wallbox at home with no dramas.
However, wife’s nan is terminally ill and needs round the clock care, so she stepped into the breech for the last few months of her life. So she spends 5 days at her nan’s in Norfolk and then 5 days off while her sisters take over. As she’s got her ZS EV and the property doesn’t have a EV charger (and is in the arse end of nowhere), she’s been using the granny to charge.
Unfortunatly, the granny charger stopped working last week. I popped to our local dealer and explained, they handed me a new one and asked me to bring the old one in when I swung by later, fortunately we have a good longstanding relationship with them. Drove it all the way to Norfolk from Birmingham, and when plugged in, this granny was DOA (rather hideous analogy given the circumstances but I have to laugh somewhere!)
I checked the plug to socket to check that wasn’t the faulty element, plug works fine even with the BMW granny out of my car. Tried a different ring on the house electrics, works fine with mine, both the MG ones didn’t. I’m starting to wonder if there is a wonky batch of the OEM ones floating around. The dealer told me to bring them both back in but have no new ones in stock either.
So really I’d like to know, any recommendations for a granny charger that isn’t MG branded? I need to get it fairly soon considering the circumstances, when I drove up there yesterday, I took her car to the nearest rapid charger and filled it up for her; but that’s not ideal when it was 30+ miles away.
If all else fails, I’ll give her mine too, but then I haven’t got one for the work visit I’ve got to Wales on Tuesday, so I’ve got a fairly tight window to sort this out.
Any advice graciously appreciated. Thanks all!
