Today - was my first day charging!

So excited to connect it at home and see it charged from 19% to 90% in 6.5 hours.

Consuming only 44.77kWh at the rate of $0.15... that's only $6.71 (my country Ecuador rates)

And i can install a 2nd energy meter just for the car with a special price of $0.05 at nights. That would be $2.21 to ride 300+ KM... Awesome.

Considering i was riding before this, a V8 f150 1998 with $35 to fill ¾ tank and run for 200km...

So... When i was presented this car... the only 2 options in my city... 64 kW with the 450km or the 350km range... I didn't know about lithium vs NMC type.

Now that I've read about it..

Its been said its only safe long-term to oscillate between 20 to 80... Not above, not below .

So its only 60% usable.

I measured the KMs since day 0 up to now, and here's my metrics:

325 km - discharged from 90% to 19%.

Thats no where near 450km because i shouldnt go below 20% and next time will be less if i only charge up to 80%...

So if i had lithium version i could go from 0 to 100% no issues for the total 350km (supposedly)

What are the real benefits of this?

Help me understand these questions:

1) can i extend this range to: 15% ==> 90%?
2) what benefits this battery have over the other if usable ranges are almost the same?
3) can i "semi-charge" - lets say from 20% to 50% one morning and then other day complete 40% to 80%... Or its best practice to go ONLY from 20 to 80% once-per-charge session?

Please let me know.

Ive never used an electric car... And this car is so adorable. Love to step on the gas and the cost-projection of using it is soooo lovely.

P.s. i also enjoyed tapping the battery level where i wanted it to stop - and it did stop there. Makes me feel secure about charging it :)

P.p.s what can i use to "block the vision" of the car charging port? I put the door semi closed to hide the charger and the lights... And then ive noticed it was wide open. Not sure if it was the wind... I have kids living next door and i dont want anyone going near it. So something to "cloak" the charging would be nice.

When charging to 100% on a dc charger the rate drops after about 80% significantly to protect the battery (electrons coming in hot !! ???) , until by the time your up in the high 90's its similar to the ac rate you charge at home (6kW(ish)).
If you're using it on a daily basis it doesn't matter too much if you charge to 100% if you need to as long as you don't leave it sitting there not being used, as I understand it.
...and regards how low should you go - I once drove my Kia Soul EV (brick shaped) into the tail end of hurricane force winds, (unusual in the UK) and arrived at the only DC charger for 30 miles with 2 miles left in the tank. I didn't know whether to vomit or have a heart attack. The relief was palpable!
I wouldn't advise on letting it get that low and certainly don't go below 0. ?

Hahaha I get it.

Yeah at 19% I had 90 km left and didn't feel safe running for longer... like... Oh no if "something" happens ill be hanged somewhere.

So I returned home, changed plans, and charged.

Thanks guys.

I noticed 19% to 55% took 3 hours, that's +36%
And 55% to 90% took longer... Less, +35% and took 3.5 hours

So yeah even in AC it took longer after 80%.

There's no DC charger in Ecuador. Yet.

So everything is 6kW...

Oh side note, there are no public chargers. The only one is type 1... Outside the food market. Had to buy an adapter from AliExpress

Don't really plan to stay in those places longer than 0.5 - 1 Hour though...

And then in a mall, where I like going to the movies - there's a KIA charger that works ONLY for Kias... This feels like an ugly move.

Anyways, feels like 6H to go from 20 to 80 and run these 300km for 5-6 days is totally fine

Yikes! I guess you're a real trail blazer then. Good on you!
What do you mean by that?

Oh just in case someone missed my last 2 questions on this subject...

Questions:

1) What about semi-charging? Like not charging from 20 to 80 but 35 to 50... And other day complete 45 to 80? - or

2) And apart from "additional range" when needed... Whats the benefit of this NMC battery over the lower range lithium?

Welcome to the world of EVs and the MG4!

In the UK most people get a 32 amp AC EV charger fitted outside their house. But some people just use a standard outdoor 16amp socket and it works for them.

It has to be outside for us because it would be freezing to leave the window open in the winter as well as bad for security.

Can you get an electrician to put a socket or EVSE outside your house?

Just charge it as you need to, when you need to. Small top ups here and there are fine to keep you moving.

The benefit of NMC is it's currently the most energy dense chemistry and able to deliver the highest current, hence it's use with long range and performance EV's. The trade off is less cycle life.

And it charges much faster on DC

So basically its maximum storage and best performance (why it has more horse power)

Thats it?

Totally worth it lol

And how long its the life span of this compared to the other one?

I think i read somewhere in this post... NCM goes 500,000 km while Lithium up to 1,000,000 km...

I do have a charger at home. 32A monophase. Charges 6.3 kW last time I checked. Took 6.5 hours to charge from 19% to 90%. And i assume it gets slower beyond 80% so its actually less to go from 20 to 80.

Just that with such poor charging infrastructure, there presumably aren't many EVs in Ecuador yet. So you must be one of the first few.

Or are there plenty EVs and everyone puts up with slow charging?

No Tesla superchargers in Ecuador?
Theres no Tesla in Ecuador.

Supposedly someone imports them but there's no tesla charger in the street. EV has been around for a while... But not many models.

I think its gonna change soon specially because the gas price rose a loooot this year. Almost 60% up.

Oh thats so cool.

They gave me the 7kW wall charger as a gift for buying the car. And I didn't know it "doesn't come with the car"

Then he showed me this "portable" charger...

And here's my question about it...

Does it work in 110v outlets? Cause that extension in your video looks like it...

Ive been told it needs 220v but the plug looks like it matches 110v. Any ideas on this?

P.s. i loved that you show pride in being a MG family. My father was hesitant "built in china"

Care to hear your review on this brand. MG First timer here. (And electric noob as well)

I actually look for 'made in China' when I buy most things, best quality and value for money for most things today. I have no interest in buying a European branded EV.

Hi Ethernea, I want to clarify that I purchased it myself; it wasn't a gift, but the price was great at $900 AUD. The charger included with the car is often referred to as a "Granny EV Charger." It functioned adequately, but it was considerably slower than I anticipated. Occasionally, when I needed to take a mid-range road trip, I was a bit short. Fortunately, that issue has been resolved now. ?

For a moment there I thought you’d nailed your charger to a tree :ROFLMAO:
Haha i love green houses. Lots of plants here. So yeah i wanted it to be installed hidden with plants. It actually has a Palo Santo (Holy Wood) tree behind.

Wow this is the first time I hear this... Im amazed by the quality of things I've purchased on Aliexpress so far. And once I tried to hop into the FBA amazon business just to realize 90% of the stuff sold there are from Alibaba (and other Chinese sources).

Why do you pick Chinese over European? Just for the price without sacrificing value?
