I've had an MG4 SE long range for a few months now (was a dealer demonstrator).

Everything has been fine but I'm now getting an issue where the car stops charging randomly on it's own.

This happens when I’m charging overnight on a schedule - usually after a couple of hours. But it also happens if I do a manual charge - sometimes after an hour, sometimes after just a couple of minutes. Happens at all levels of charge.

There’s no schedule or charging limit set in the car.

The BG SyncEV charger is being controlled via the Monta app - and the log says “SuspendedEV” which suggests it’s the car pausing the charge. I say pausing, but it never restarts itself when it stops like this.

It makes no difference if I've set the charge to stop at 80% or not, and it always stops at different levels of charge.

Anyone else had an issue like this?

Is yours a 2022 spec car? (No rear wiper). If yes then this may be signs of the CCU failing (or a software update being needed).

Yes it has no rear wiper. Tried on another AC and same issue. Guess it’s definitely a car issue
I am pretty certain that it is a CCU failure. Mine always stopped after just one minute, so useless; the fact that your stop times are variable could, however, suggest that a software solution is possible. A visit to a garage is needed but beware that MG UK will insist on a load of checks before authorising a replacement CCU, so don't expect to get the car back for at least a few days - mine took 16 days!

Another (most likely) failure of the CCU - read this thread

When you go to the dealer have as much evidence as you can regards use of other AC charging eg granny charger. Dealer should be aware of the issue but may have to do a software update first before MG will authorise the replacement.

Thanks for your replies and link to that useful thread - it does seem like the same issue.

I tried a 22KW public charger and it stopped with that after less than a minute on 3 tries. Will try with the granny charger next. And maybe I'll try a fast DC charger just to see as well.

DC CCS rapid charging should still work perfectly fine - more expensive but the only solution until you get it fixed. Hopefully there is a local Tesla open to all charger locally as they are the cheapest.

Mine was diagnosed in one visit but took four visits over 4 months to resolve (lots of time waiting for CCU to arrive and then software issues getting everything working again).

Car went in today and they diagnosed it with a failing CCU pretty quickly. Apparently the part will arrive on Monday. They must be pretty used to this now! Thanks for all your help - it was really helpful in checking and when speaking to them about it.

I had this problem and it turned out to be the charge cable. Got a new one and no more problems.
I did borrow one from a friend to start with.

I have had the same issue with my MG4 Trophy LR.
The car would not allow more than a few kWh charge to be put into the car - either with a Zappy 7kW charger or the Granny charger.
I had not problems until the after car had its first service at the dealership.
May be a coincidence, but I can't help thinking that they may have updated some software which in turn somehow upset the charge control on the EV.
Anyway after nearly 3 weeks in the garage, Stoneacre Derby sorted the issue somehow by updating the software (having initially ordered and fitted a new CCU which apparently did not sort the issue).
When, on collecting the car I complained bitterly about the disappointing delay, they told me that MG UK have only one technical help person that they have to contact and they have been known to wait up to 3 days before being able to talk to him / her.
I love driving this car, but this experience has seriously shaken my confidence in MG UK support and the EV and I am now seriously considering changing the car for a car company that has much better software and support!
I, and I suspect many other MG EV owners have had to put up with many hopelessly flawed software issues since new (I have almost filled a page listing all of the 'issues'). I was told when initially complaining that software updates would only be done at the yearly service intervals. However as stated above, they became much worse after the first service!

I am now a retired Chartered Electrical engineer, but having spent over 50 years in product design, I find it hard to believe that MG have any product software testing at all prior to their EV product launches!

I suggest that you check other forums before you decide to change makers. You only get problems posted on forums. Occasionally you get a bit of praise

In general the beta testing of car software is done by consumers. The pressure of ever faster release cycles and competition means corners are cut and even some very famous names have had some appalling software releases.

The problem is exacerbated by many automakers being inexperienced at software and outsourcing across multiple suppliers, with problems integrating.

It should not be like this. However, it is difficult to know how makers are building their software so I am not sure how you pick better, except by seeing what the end user reports are like.

Ironically MG have fixed most of the software bugs. It is just nearly impossible to get all the updates to be on the latest versions of everything.

My SE SR stops charging randomly on the granny charger. Going into the charging screen, it says "Charging stopped - no obvious cause" Reported it to the dealer at last update visit, but still the same.
