MG4 Trophy LR
Hello all

Currently waiting on delivery of lease car.

Mg4 trophy my23. The more I read on this car the more I’m thinking of cancelling lease.

From paint issues ripping seats and faults this car looks more and more of a bad choice

What would everyone say knowing how their car has been?

My MG4 Trophy has been a pleasure to have for the last 16 months. No problems charging on AC and DC. Comfortable ride, economical with home charging, no smelly petrol hands. Switch off LKA, adjust Forward Collision AEB. If you need Bluetooth get the upgrade. Check the forum for the inspection you should do before accepting the car. Make sure you get the manual key (stored one in each of the key fobs - get the dealer to show you how to use it. Set up an iSmart app account before collection and get the dealer to help you link your account to the car.

Major gripe is the lack of a space saver wheel, you only get the gunk.

Enjoy the car.

My car is the SE, but I love it to bits. Drives like a dream, and so many cool features. No paint issues at all in 17 months and over 13,000 miles. I have fitted seat covers for protection, but the SE cloth seats look pretty durable.

Bear in mind that forums like this are a mecca for people with problems. However, the problems are the exception, not the rule. If you go to any car forum you'll read about similar lists of issues.

Loads of people (like me) loving their cars and never had any significant issues.

Out of interest, what car (make, model, year) are you replacing with the MG4?

Currently driving a 2010 bmw 118d which has gave me no issues had it for 5 years and only replaced a rear wiper motor

I decided I wanted a auto as the knees were starting to play up

I drive 50 miles on motorway every other weekend there and back and occasionally 120 miles each way on motorway to work office most of time I work from home

I have watched a huge amounts of YouTube videos which are 99% positive.

Started looking on forums and saw issues

My guess is that you will be surprised how good the electric driving experience is. When you have had a reliable car it is a concern. If you have low expectations, you will be surprised how good these cars are to drive. Did you have a test drive of the MG4?

My MG5 is our "family" car. I prefer driving it more than my Lexus NX300h hybrid. It is obviously not the build quality of the Lexus but no way is it basic (MG5). I am sure your MG4 will be similar.

Forget it is electric and judge the car on road manners, comfort and ease of driving. Then when you look at the economy you will be blown away.
Very interested to know what you think after running the car for a week or so?

When is it being delivered?

Stupidly enough no I didn’t test drive one. Just liked everything I saw on videos. After having an old car I just wanted something with features my bmw doesn’t even have a cup holder so having an auto with cruise control and camera was luxury to me.

The dealer is showing they are due in about two weeks so should be end of this month.

No problems with ours. Likely yours will be fine as well.

Some people have been unlucky and had issues, but I think that can happen with any model.

OK, being pedantic here, it's not an "auto", there are no gears, so there is no automatic changing of gears.

As others it's a fantastic driving experience. Having the ability to have precise control of car speed with just one pedal, becomes very addictive. I really resent having to use the brake pedal on my ICE car.

However, everything is not all a bed of roses. there is no simple cruise control, it's "adaptive", so it will slow down when it thinks it needs to.
A lot of people are happy with the way the car does this, but others aren't.
You'll have to find out where you sit on this when you start driving it.

Some people are even happy with Lane Keep Assist, (LKA). But most turn it of on the "preflight checks".
So it's swings and roundabouts, for me the +s far outway the -vs.
As far as driving goes, It's easily the best vehicle we've owned, even with the few cons.

I like the fact no changing gears I have bad knees from football rugby and muaythai so not having to keep applying a clutch is one of main reasons I want to change car.

The adaptive cruise control I think shouldn’t be a massive issue on motorway I normally drive at 65 for better economy

Regarding the lka I used to drive a work van that had similar about 7-8 years ago and had experiences people talk about where it got confused when lanes merged and tried to steer you against the actual direction you wanted

It’s good to see positive reviews from actual owners

I watched all the videos too - at least the ones that were available in March/April 2023. I was very struck by the extremely favourable verdicts on drive quality. I didn't think there was anything glitchy that I couldn't put up with or work round.

I went for a test drive and came back with a stupid grin on my face babbling "take my money!" I totally haven't regretted it, even when I was presenting the dealer with a fairly extensive list of software bugs, plus the undertray issue.

Two things to bear in mind. Many people come to forums like this precisely because they have a problem. So what you see is not representative. Regarding paint quality and seat wear, these are one-off issues individual owners have experienced - most have not had these problems.

The other thing is that all but one of the list of bugs I handed my dealer have been fixed by software updates. The car is now significantly better than it was when I picked it up 17 months ago. Your car will be like that from the start.

It doesn't support driver profiles so you have to set everything up before you set off (maybe even that will come) but once you press that accelerator the stupid grin comes back on your face and all is forgiven.

The car drives really well and we love it, but there are a number of software bugs which are still not fixed (we have the Trophy version with more systems).

We have had the following faults:
  • AC charging failure: took best part of 4 months to get this fixed, mostly waiting for parts.
  • ePhone SOS keeps failing: numerous updates applied, I think it is now fixed finally.
  • Automatic emergency braking when it shouldn't: dealer says there is no fix, so we switch this off now
  • Rattling boot lid: dealer couldn't fix, so did it myself.
  • ACC: wasn't initially usable, software updates have now fixed this.
  • Driver's footrest failed: replaced after 18 months, not covered by warranty, cost £75.
  • LKA: same as most people, waiting for the final fix, currently turned off.
  • CarPlay: despite many infotainment updates, still has various bugs.
  • Driver's seat: now showing signs of cracking on side bolster, no longer under warranty (12 months only on interior).

We love the car but the warranty/service experience and particularly the difficulty getting software updates to fix problems has put us off having another.

I agree that it is a minority of people having these issues, I still think we got a good one though, there are some lemons that people have had to return.

As a general rule it is people with issues who will post on forums and not people who have no issues.

I moved the to the MG4 from a manual Mini Clubman and yes you will notice a quality difference on some of the materials and software, but there are just as many issues with other manufacturer's cars as there are with MG.

For example the steering wheel design on pretty much every Mini (F56 generation) means you get an intermittent fault with the horn. There is also an issue with the design of the automatic headlight levelling mechanism.

The Automatic gear selection lever for all BMW and Mini models has a poor design which means a spring fails and the car reports a secure to prevent rolling error when you try to put it into park.

That said the Mini was pretty much the best car I have owned. However, the MG gives more bang for the buck than any car I have owned and puts a smile on my face for different reasons to the Mini.

I have treated the move to an EV as a move to a new World (which it is ) and try not to compare it to the ICE World. You will need to get your head into a new space.

I got cold feet too after coming on and reading this forum, but I've had my trophy for 18 months now and havent had a single issue with it. I love it, the comfort level is much better than my Mercedes GLA and the drive is so smooth.

No car is perfect and there will always be things you'll dislike about the way its been designed. I haven't had any seat ripping or paint issues. Anyone who gets into the car always compliments it on how spacious and comfortable it is, even turned a few EV haters into having second thoughts!

Take a test drive and see how you feel. I was sold after the test drive and nothing has made me regret my decision in 18 months of driving it.

I know others have had much worse experiences than me with regards to customer service and servicing faults. But that will be subjective depending on the car you receive and the dealer you're with
