Cyberster - what we know so far

So how do you disengage it ? The thought of any sort of clutch on an electric car sounds horrible
Nothing is disengaged, the motor(s) remain connected at all times, when not under power, they just spool round. (or regenerate based on software control when required)

My understanding is that when not "powered", the front motor is effectively in neutral, meaning that it has to have magnetising current above a certain speed to oppose the permanent magnet of the motor. This is so that the motor doesn't generate too high a back-EMF that would force its way into the battery, causing a "brick wall" at some 40 mph. The magnetising current means that instantaneous power is flowing into and out of the motor windings, and this current, while fairly low compared with traction power, does cause some I²R losses in the motor windings, motor controller, and cables. There is also some eddy current and other magnetic losses, on top of all the mechanical losses already mentioned.

That said, I agree that a clutch sounds bad. And it would realistically have to be on the motor side, as the torque when driving the front wheels at 150 kW would necessitate a crazy strong clutch. So bing on the motor side of the final drive, the final drive losses would still be present. And of course the clutch has its own losses, cost, weight, space requirement, electronics to operate it, and so on. Plus, it's just eww , so ICE like ?

The suggestion on the post was to disengage to save the friction of the motor
There'd be little benefit in doing this, as you'd only be removing a few kg of rotating mass (The front motor armature) from the equation, the drive shafts and reduction box would still be there, with the gears rotating in oil being the main source of losses. Clutches and a neutral gear are only used because an ICE engine has to idle, rotating under power at all times, so there has to be a way to remove it from the drive train when a car isn't moving, it's just not needed for EV's.

I'll agree that clutches and mechanical neutral gear are not needed in EVs. But an electrical "neural gear" (having nothing to do with mechanical gears, of course) is needed, at least where a permanent magnet motor is involved. Which was my point, even if poorly made.

So I’ve had a good two hour test drive. Thanks @Miles Roberts CG for arranging.

My thoughts are simple. Absolutely incredible. A fantastic car, produced to a very high standard and unbelievably quick. Ridiculously quick.

Unfortunately for me there is no chance that I would get it on my drive at present as I have quite a step up due to a slope. Builder has been this morning to look for a solution. As long as that can be addressed, we will be ordering.

Amazing.

So my car has arrived at the dealership ready for collection early next week.

My wife told me I could have any colour I wanted as long as it's red. End of story with that. ;) Of course it looks great. I also fancied the Camden grey with red top or the English white with red top but alas that's admiring the choices in the UK which we don't get here. To be fair the car is so nicely designed it looks stunning in any colour. Any colour in your driveway will look spectacular and you won't have any regrets regardless of the colour choice. And yes, the yellow is indeed striking. (y):)

maybe interesting how they solve the rear light arrow problem here in Thailand.
I do not know if this is legal in the UK

You need indicators though. The brake lights are just LED strip. I dont know the full legality of that but its been approved for UK. Audi have been using fancy LED lights for indicators since 2016 ? no one said anything

The Thai guy with yellow Cyberster looks like he wrapped the indicators

Personally don't see the problem with the indicators. But he's done a good job of wrapping them. Don't like the mats at all.
The Thais don't waste much time modding their motors, do they. ??
