MG5 Steering - a concern or not?

That’s sort of where wondered about temp and pressure and increased or decreased pressure on the suspension components and steering.

It only happens at motorway speeds is what’s odd

Well one of the many odd things with our cars ;)

I’ve experienced it at lower speeds, just on a normal 30 road.
Mine is a 22 plate LR with 26k miles on

No got no lane assist on, not even the alert.
Interestingly I feel like the wheel behaves like it does when you’re using the pilot mode and it self steers. It’s very odd

You could always take your hands off the wheel and see if Pilot is actually on. :)

What tyre pressure are people using?

I have mine at 2.1 ish when cold

I had a chat with James at cleverly and he had experienced the same thing.

His just stopped happening and went away through he initially thought it might be a dry top bearing

The fact it went away might point to tyres

It seems pretty common

I am happy to be proved wrong but my money is on a tyre related problem.
Yes its an odd feeling like the steering has developed a centre "indent" and I did originally suspect a PAS fault, but its far too unpredictable for that and wouldn't disappear when swapping or changing the tyres. I find it pretty unpleasant on motorway trips and sometimes use Pilot (2022 LR) which itself struggles to overcome the centre resistance resulting in a zigzaggy (more than usual) track.
It is actually very similar to the white lining effect some cars have (my 2005 Accord was a terror for it). If you have the problem swap the tyres front to rear I reckon it will go away ...at least for a few thousand miles.

Right there is no rhyme or reason to this

Drive to Stansted, still notchy at 65. Accelerated to 75 for a little bit and notchiness went away upon my return to 65

On my return from the airport very little notchyness

Seems to happen for me in the 60- 65 range but it makes no sense

Stopped for a few minutes and notchyness was gone after redoing carriageway

Only happens on dual carriageways and motorways, same speed on an A road totally fine

Maybe it’s haunted, would that be covered on the warranty?

I've had weird steering effects in an ICE car in the past, in the "slow" lane on motorways. I think it is the result of rutting from HGVs.

After a few normal motorway runs in the last week or so the old notchyness returned. It started just as joined the M3 off the M25 and got into the interminable 50mph zone. I had only experienced it at 65 -70mph previously so this was unexpected. As I was in the go-slow zone I could fiddle a bit to see if I could make it go away. I tried changing lanes, tried joining the 'really slow' lane which brought the speed down to 40mph, nothing made any difference. I came off the motorway at Fleet services for lunch and there after it was as right as rain. I don't think it is tyres.

I’m not convinced it’s tyres either. Mines been doing it all week going to work and back.
It’s very odd and very annoying. Mines also developed what I can only describe as a faint rattle/static noise from the dash. Only there when I’m driving and doesn’t get louder or change with speed or road surface so no idea what that’s about.
For the steering problem I guess one of us needs a decent dealer willing to take their car out for a drive to experience it and see if they can figure out what the issue is.

What I don’t understand is that if I am not on the motorway it doesn’t replicate

65 on the motorway yes notchy if I am travelling dead straight

65 on an a road dead straight nothing

Maybe camber stops it happening?

It’s really odd.

I am trying higher tyre pressures now which seem to help

Well until it starts again

I might need to try this, all spring/summer my pressures were higher and I didn’t notice it.
New front tyres in the summer and the garage left them at 2.5 and then I didn’t bother adjusting them till a month or so ago. But up until the last few weeks everything has been fine. Maybe it’s not a pressure issue but a tyre temperature issue? Really don’t know

I have gone for 2.3 cold

If that still sucks on my drive to Stansted tonight I will try 2.4 and so on to see if it makes any difference

Or I will try a blood ritual and sacrifice a unicorn to appease the mg spirits

So notichness returned on the motorway pretty quicly.

30mi of a roads at 60 fine

Within 20mi motorway (A1) at 60 notchy

I then went from 2.4 warm to 2.5 bar warm
Still notchy
So I dropped the pressure down to 2.2 / 2.3 warm on the front

And the notchyness disappeared and stayed gone from the whole 150 mi return trip

I kept the rear at about 2.4/2.5 when warm
Journey was 300 mile round trip outside temp around 4 degrees driving between 60 and 65

Totally un scientific and possibly totally serendipitous but the lowered pressure seemed to help

So just thought I’d drop an update.
A few journeys recently and problem is still there. I’m starting to think that the issue isn’t mechanical and more electronic though. I have noticed on a couple of journeys when I’ve driven for a bit and then parked up the return journey I don’t get the problem. Could it be the tyres because they’re warmed up? If so then why doesn’t the problem stop after driving for a while. I suspect it’s to do with turning the car off and back on again.
Don’t know why this was never an issue until recently though.
