Worst car I've ever had

There are 2 ways of charging an EV - AC (called fast) and DC (called rapid or ultra rapid).

Most cars, including the MG have onboard chargers that have a maximum rate of c. 7kW so even if you try a 22kW (or faster) charge point the car limits it to 7kW.

If you try a DC rapid or ultra rapid and use a CCS plug the Trophy will charge much faster - up to around 140kW. Note that the maximum rate on DC is also affected by how full the battery is, temperature and a couple of other things.

Thank you for this. So there is no point is using 22Kw charger for my car. Do I need to buy a DC charging cable then?

All DC chargers the cable is part of it so no cable required

It'll look something like this & marked CCS

Fair enough, its my first ( and last) EV and I didn't do the full PhD needed to become expert in all the terminology or insights into which battery does what but can you explain what you mean by "If you need to charge faster than that use a rapid charger". I used a PodPoint 22Kw charger and after 1 hour it had only charged 10% . That's not all a 22Kw would do is it?
You didn’t have to get a “PhD” for your first petrol car did you? Going by some of your other replies you’ve tried to charge the car once, and already it’s the last EV you’ll ever own, what a dramatic over reaction.

If you want to learn some basics or need some help just ask the nice people on his forum, but you’ll get more help with a positive attitude and an open mind.

Perhaps you could start by reading the manual, as it explains how your car works. Things like how to charge for instance.

Yeah, I didn't mention the 22kw charging in my response because it was a basic error of understanding of the two types of charging.

It is a shame that no one checked understanding of the AC vs. DC charging difference upon delivery because it is crucial for EV ownership.

However, most dealers/handover agents would no doubt assume that an EV owner would understand the two different charging systems the car has.

I guess most of us forget that we didn't know that stuff once and I think in general this community is great for explaining things to new owners.

It sounds like you did not get enough information when choosing the car and the lease company did the poorest hand over when they delivered the car by not explaining how things like charging the car would work.

Moving from many years of driving ICE cars to an EV is a strange new World of new terms (none of which are standard between manufactures).

You may also have some faults with the car which the lease company should fix.

EV's more than other vehicles are lots of computers all talking to each other to make things work and sometimes you will see glitches.

For example, the error you are seeing with the SOS system might be due to a poor mobile phone signal as this is what that system uses from a SIM built into the car. If there is no signal when the system boots up or checks for one then it will display an error that can be cleared once mobile signal is detected again

There is a YouTube Channel called JerryPan and cars with over 10 video manuals explaining all sorts of things about the car and you might find this helps you. Jerry Pan and CARS

There might be.

However, it will only charge at 7kw, same as most people have at home.

If you want faster than that then find a DC charger.

Zapmap, Electroverse or ABRP are good apps to help you find a suitable charger.

They often colour-code by speed and you can put your car in there and it will tailor accordingly.

MG 4 150Kw Trophy EV Long Range 64kWh

Lights going out while I drive.(once on a country road,..f**** terrifying)
Strange random messages about SOS not working flash up and disappear.
Other messages appearing once ( including "System Fail") and unable to find them again. Again terrifying while on Motorway
Less than 200 mile range despite being "Long Range" .
Needing to complete a three stage routine to turn off lane change detection EVERY TIME I DRIVE!!
Trying to use a fast 22KW public charger only to find our the car can only charge at a pathetically slow 7KW
No easy button to turn radio on. have to "ask" via voice control and that takes 5-6 attempts on average.

So, hate my first (and last electric car) and hate this one even more than I could have imagined.
Another reason to support why I got rid of mine - I really do feel your pain and just like you I certainly won’t be buying another electric car. A feel sorry for these company car drivers who probably have no choice in the matter.

"Less than 200 mile range despite being "Long Range" . " - I get plenty more than 200mile range. Your driving style and weather will impact stated estimated range, much like it does in an ICE car.

"Needing to complete a three stage routine to turn off lane change detection EVERY TIME I DRIVE!!" - swipe a screen, press button, press another button. Takes five seconds. All cars with 5-star Euro NCAP safety ratings since summer 2023 require "lane change detection" to be turned on every time, get used to it. Your next car will be the same, EV or ICE.

"Trying to use a fast 22KW public charger only to find our the car can only charge at a pathetically slow 7KW" - 7KW is common for AC charging on cars. Thankfully others have educated you post your little ill-informed rant.

"No easy button to turn radio on. have to "ask" via voice control and that takes 5-6 attempts on average." There's literally a play button that starts the radio. Or you can set the right-side steering wheel toggle to play the radio. Another user error.

Maybe try reading the manual and doing a little bit of research in future.

top one is the ac charging socket max 7KW
bottom one is the (fast) DC charger socket, up to 140 KW

if going for home charging, from a normal mains socket, on what is often called a "granny charger" the is max 3KW.

Out of curiosity, if you got rid of yours, why are you still here?
I used to be a moderator on saabscene, haven't been on it since I got rid of my Saab
To help others make the correct decision when it comes to looking at buying an electric car.
Before I purchased my MG I joined this forum to help me decide if I was going to spend my money wisely so if I can help just one person make the correct decision then my job is done.
Sorry if my message offends anyone but if your prepared to put up with things like lane keep assist plus much more then you have my vote :)

Don't think you'll have an awful lot of choice there, assuming you buy another car in 10+ years time.

'I certainly won’t be buying another electric car.' Based on what exactly? None of the 'faults' highlighted by the OP is EV-centric, except the Charging issue, which is not a problem with EVs, but a lack of fundamental research by this person. Going from an ICE to an EV is a major change in mindset, and requires some forethought.

I'm sorry but I really didn't understand your reply and I don't know what a DC Rap[id charger is or where I would find one. I used a charger in Tesco, a 22Kw Pod Point but it didn't charge any faster. I Googled why that might be the case, and read that my MG4 can only use up to 7Kw chargers. Is this wrong?
Technically not wrong, it can only AC charge to 7kW. If you use a DC charger, e.g. a 50 kW pod point charger (they have a big cable attached to them and you have to remove the second cap in your charge port) it will go up to 135ish kW. Tesla are great for fast charging.

I fear that as people are "forced" into EVs, we are going to see a lot more of this sorta stuff. At the very least, people need to understand DC vs AC charging and how to find the different types before getting an EV. Typical unhelpful dealer caused this situation I fear.
