Can anyone (Can't select D or R)

Hi my 2024 mg trophy have just started not to go into drive or reverse just goes to neutral and that's it I have to turn off all the car exit the car lock it wait 10 minutes get back in and start all again its done this 5 times so far anyone got any ideas about this

Assuming it’s new because 2024… Have you contacted the place that you bought it from and asked them for advise yet? That should be your first step.

Yes I have they ask me to bring it in what I don't mine but it's going to cost me 275 pounds I got free service and vehicle check in Feb so I was thinking would they look at it then??

Are you saying they are charging you £275 to investigate issues with a fault on a new car?

If so - them to jog on. That is unacceptable.

I no that's what I was thinking waiting for mg main office to get back to me they said if they find it not my fault they give me it back but I got to pay for the labour at 125 pounds I not having this

How do they expect you to bring it in if your car doesn't go into drive?

It's happening now again not all the time they told me if I get it there they lend me car for few days

So there's a few interlocks, before you can engage drive or reverse.
Foot on brake is one and I think drivers seatbelt is another. There are probably more.
One of these contacts going intermittent is a probable reason.
So try pressing harder on the brake pedal, or lifting foot off and pressing again. Same with seatbelt, plug and unplug. If you can isolate the problem yourself, and tell the dealer, it should help a lot.
Others may know of other interlocks stopping drive from happening. I'm not sure, but open doors may be another. If I remember I'll have a play in ours tomorrow and see if I can discover more

Just tried on our car, and I was wrong about seatbelt, will go into R and D with seatbelt undone, but it certainly won't with doors open.

This has happened to my X-POWER but very rarely, for me it's probably due to trying to drive off before key systems have booted up. Usually going back into park releasing and re-pressing foot brake resolves it.

For general information, MG in the UK will investigate faults free of charge for only 3 months from new, after that if the dealer cannot reproduce a fault that is covered by warranty, MG won't pay them for the diagnostic work and so many garages will charge you their standard labour rate.

This is all part of the low-cost business model MG UK have set up.

Yeah I've had issues like this a couple of times when I've been trying to manouvre and get in/out of parking spaces quickly.

I think I tried to change gear before the car was ready and that was the problem.

Funny thing is mine will USUALLY go into R or D without my seatbelt on but NOT ALWAYS !!

I haven't worked why but in my experience this stilll may be a factor.

Manually turn off the handbrake, will allow you to D or R without seatbelt.

Had you had a drink, as it pick it up, that is my experience, and mate drive me home

Mine comes with MG breakdown cover when it won't drive call them out.

The dealers aren't rogue, merely cost-focussed rather than customer-focussed.
