Faulty charging software?

Holding the weight of the rapid CCS2 plug into the car socket helps to maintain the control pin contact to allow the charge to initiate. Once charging has started you can carefully let go of the plug.

As has been pointed out here (by @siteguru?) charging cables are heavy and sometimes if not firmly pushed in tend to droop which breaks the control contact. You might like to see if that is happening next time you charge
I will certainly look at that next time I charge.

It pretty much can't be just the on-board charger if it's affecting DC rapid charges.

My suspicion is the EVCC unit (Electric Vehicle Communications Controller), which seems to oversee all charges, and I suspect connects to the control and proximity pilot pins on the charging socket. There was a batch of dodgy EVCCs that got pressed into service due to the post-COVID parts shortage, but I would hope that these would not be appearing in recently manufactured cars.
I am taking my car to my local MG dealer next Thursday, I am hoping that they can investigate properly and provide me with an answer.

After having my MG4 (which suddenly refused to charge after being fine up until then) returned to the dealers I have had the news that the Vehicle Control Unit is caput.
Loan car quickly organised so dealership has been great, but a little worrying about the MG to say the least.
Batch of faulty components?

That is what is concerning me, I wonder if my car is faulty. I have my car loaned through Tusker, so if the situation does not improve, maybe I can change my car to another one. I really don't want to be dealing with temperamental charging for another 3 years.

4 month old MG 4 charges for no more than 1 minute at a time regardless of whether initiated in car or remotely via MG ismart app.
I've used 3 different cables and 3 different chargers to no avail...any advice MUCH appreciated as currently vehicle of little practical use!
You describe exactly the same issues that I have been getting with my MG4. It is only 6 months old but in that time I have been getting major charging issues. Over Christmas, I could not get any charge at all, I went to 3 different DC chargers on Boxing Day and all I got was 2kW out of one of them. I tried on a couple of other occasions but no joy. The really interesting thing is that the granny charger works, all be it, very, very slow and the AC at my work is generally okay. Which begs the question, why can I charge on a granny charger ir a 7.5 kW wall charger, but not a DC network charger. I am too nervous and lack any confidence to do longer driving, as I am so concerned about being able to charge on a DC network out and about. The car is now with MG for the third time in 6 months ownership. They did contact me after a few days and it would appear that it is a car charging unit fault. This clearly makes sense but it’s a job and a half to get to the bottom of the problem and get it diagnosed. I really hope this sorts it, my contract for the car is another 3.5 years and I don’t fancy struggling all that time with a car that is very unpredictable. I can only wish you luck, I don’t envy your situation, as I have been in it myself. Keep trying MG or your lease company.

It sounds like they are going to replace the Combined Charger Unit (CCU), which will very likely fix the problem. MG seem to have had a batch of bad CCUs. It's now so long since Covid that I think it no longer has nothing to do with that. However I suppose that some electronic components may still be in short supply.

Although the usual CCU fault was that AC charging didn't work, but DC charging was fine. This is the opposite of what @Richard 77 seems to be reporting. Plus his profile says he has an SE SR ... the usual CCU fault was on early LR models (which supported 3-phase charging); charging issues with the SR are uncommon.
