Is the not uncommon CCU failure on Gen 1 MG4's just specific to LR models, or does it happen to SE SR's as well?
 
The answer is No ... the SE SR has (and has always had) a 6.6kW single phase onboard charger. This also now applies (in the UK) to all MG4 models, except the ER which is the only one now to have a 3-phase onboard charger.
I didn't realise the ER was 3-phase, thanks for that.🙂

Update, I've just checked the charge socket on my ER and definitely no pins at L2,L3. Hey ho. 😏As I charge mostly at home, it's not an issue, if I'm out and about on a long journey I'll be using DC Rapid chargers...or AC if I have to.
 
Was just thinking about the CCU - am I right in understanding that the 3 phase chargers only allow 11kW charge - i.e. 16A per phase? But when used with a single phase they allow 32A on L1?
 
Yes ... near-enough. The 3-phase OBC* is rated to 7kW single-phase as it binds (internally) two of the OBC phases to allow the higher charge rate. The dedicated single-phase OBC is only rated to 6.6kW for some reason, though in reality the difference makes little effect overall.

Thanks. Guess we'll never know, but the reason for asking is that I was wondering if the failures are restricted to those that have been charging on single phase? If so, that could point to the issue being related to poor CCU design not handling that much current, even if it is internally split. Do we know whether those who always charge with 3 phase also have that issue?
 
That's a hard question to answer, as it would depend on the failure rate of CCUs in the EU (where 3-phase charging is more prevalent than it nominally is in the UK).
