You save nothing more. It doesn't matter what day in March you renew it will be due by 1st March 2026. You pay for the month in which you are renewing.I can save a few more nano pennies by renewing 31st March 2025. ..

I wouldn't leave it until the last couple of days though. I got my MG4 on the 30th March 2023 and the tax last year was due on 1st April not the 1st March. You save nothing more. Yes, everyone who wants to do this might as well do it now. No benefit in waiting longer. You save nothing more. It doesn't matter what day in March you renew it will be due by 1st March 2026. You pay for the month in which you are renewing.
It will already increase on the 1st April to £195.I hope everyone has renewed their tax by now. Then the next renewal date will be 1st March 2026.
Now, because of the current political and government financial situation, the Chancellor, (aka Rachel from accounts), in the autumn budget, MAY review the Vehicle Excise Duty and increase it above the current £190. When and if, and by how much is anyone’s guess.
However, if this happens, it will be worth considering renewing your car tax in the month before any proposed increase, and take a £190 hit instead of any increased Vehicle Excise Duty for 2026.
Just my thoughts, but put a note in your diaries for the October budget!
Even when Rachel from accounts increases the VED levy, it won't apply until 1st April 2026. So if you've retaxed in March 2025 (such that your renewal date is 1st March 2026) then you'll still only pay the forthcoming rate of £195 from 1st April 2025. That's the other benefit of this "trick" - you delay any future increases by 11 months.I hope everyone has renewed their tax by now. Then the next renewal date will be 1st March 2026.

Isn’t it 11 months, not 12?Just a quick reminder for the very few who haven't already done this, TODAY is your LAST CHANCE to save a few quid by taxing your EV in March 2025, this will get you 12 months free VED before we all have to start paying for it.
Yes it is.Isn’t it 11 months, not 12?
I wonder if that was for people who had their VED renewal due 1st April 2025 anyway? For some people they've somehow got a 1st April renewal (still at 0 cost). But for most people you are correct.
Have we got everyone sorted now then ??You’ll all have done this, I’m sure, but I suddenly woke up 20 minutes ago and realised that I hadn’t re-taxed my car to retain the £0.00 charge for another year (from tomorrow, the charge will be £195)
Done now… phew!
Yes it is. As clearly stated on the gov website you can renew online up to 2 months before your renewal is due. I posted this sometime ago.I wonder if that was for people who had their VED renewal due 1st April 2025 anyway?
Maybe the DVLA system detects that and so assumes you want to renew it starting April 1st yet it still gives you the FOC price as you are buying it before the price increases. I bet if those same folk use the postal reminder number instead of the V5C number then they will pay the new rate £195? Peter
