Driving Licenses - Automatic / Manual

Good to know, bring on the snow. Obviously mean learn how to control a car in adverse conditions before you encounter an emergency situation is important. ;-)

So important its part of the driving test in Sweden Sweden Part 2 test - Risk Training

It assume it will be all or nothing though, unlike a manual handbrake though

This relates to the ZS (gen1) and was posted in the ZS forum 25/01/21 and may or may not be the same on the 5, I have not tried it.

Pressing "P" when driving does nothing - I've tried it.
Pulling the "EPB" (handbrake switch) whilst driving initiates emergency braking and activates all four wheels - I've tried it.

Standard driver training for high risk chauffeurs included the reverse "J" turn. Could be interesting in an EV and with auto handbrake:eek:

A story that was doing the rounds in the 80s was of the American woman past middle age that came to the UK to research her family history. She hired a car at Heathrow and set of to the west country.

When she returned the Hertz receptionist asked how she got on. "Not very well" she replied, "above 40 it was very noisy and was bad up hills". "On the way back it started to smoke and getting into reverse was very difficult"

They worked out that for most of the two weeks it had spent the entire time in second gear.

Manuals are going the way of the dinosaurs. I learnt in a manual, and initially my Mrs did but pregnancies got in the way and she never sat her practical test. Now we are ev owners and we wont be going back to ICE she is getting an automatic licence. My kids will likely be doing the same.

My kids have no intention of driving anything other than an EV, the oldest is learning on manual because he needs that licence for work, youngest will refuse anything other than EV from day 1.

It will be beneficial to have a conventional manual gearbox license for a long time yet.
Your own car is obviously a key part of your driving experience but there will likely be occasions when you need to drive work vehicles, hire cars or vehicles belonging to friends/relatives and these are not all going to be EV.

Work & hire cars will also be new hence EVs quite soon!
