Hi all,

My 1st gen smart meter has just been transferred to the database so should now be able to move onto an EV tariff. Just now need to work out if it's worth it.

Has anyone made a spreadsheet already to help them calculate their usage?

Thanks in advance

Depends on what tariff you are on and what you want to move to, as well as if you can utilise cheap rate for other things like running certain appliances in that window.

If you chose Octopus then feel free to use my referral code for £50 in each of our accounts. Just click the link

Yes I have, a simple one for comparing tariffs totals based on usage. I have attached it for anyone who wants it.
You need to know your annual usage in kWh for Elec and Gas and the standing Charge (SC) for the tariffs. It will show you total cost for each and a grand total. You can also add in cheapo rate overnight usage based again on annual usage.
Copy and paste whole rows to add more comparisons.

I received an email from Octopus yesterday saying my SMETS1 had been updated to be able to be read by them. Just after I had arranged for a SMETS2 to be fitted later this month.

I understand Octopus SMETS1 meters will get an OTA upgrade to SMETS2. I believe they are reaching the end of the programme but have not done mine yet.

Yeah all SMETS1 meters will be getting it. I had mine installed a few years ago and has been redundant for a while, until now. Going to be giving octopus a call in the morning to see if they'll be able to work with it or not

My updated SMETS1 is now providing half hourly updates and I have been invited to join Octopus Go.
I just need to accept the terms and conditions and I will switch, apparently.

I am currently on the Avro flexible after I got moved to Octopus following the great downfall of many a supplier and have calculated that I will be marginally better off with Octopus Go at the higher daily rate, than I would have been by staying on the lower daily rate of the variable tariff when it goes up in April. (IGNORING any off peak car charging just day to day stuff).

Reason for this is my low normal day to day electricity usage. With just 2 of us in the house with gas CH but electric cooking we only use c. 6kWh / day. By fixing on the Go tariff even though the daily rate is 2.5p/kWh more, the daily standing charge is 21p less (equiv 3.5p/kWh on our usage).

PS @Niki94d was the spreadsheet of any use ?

It was useful thanks. Just need to ring octopus now to see what the rates are. I tried yesterday but couldn't get through

Just enter your postcode, after the 'loading' message finishes then scroll down. DO NOT click on get quote.
Easier if you click on filters to specify smart / fixed / domestic.

This is the simple one I calculated. I'm on Bulb and switched from their Standard Tariff to their EV Tariff. Prices of both Tariffs rise in April, but its still cheaper on the EV Tariff after those rises.

Re Octopus I got a GO quote the other day, in my area:

4 hours off peak at 7.5p/kWh or 5 hours off peak at 8.25p/kWh.

Peak charge 30.6075p/kWh

Standing charge is 24.108p/day. This is the same for all versions of Go and Go Faster

My Go tariff is 5p/15.59p so quite a jump. it runs out in June and I asked for the prices as I was considering swapping it early to lock in for a year, but I'm going to ross my fingers and leave it a month or so.

Standing charge in my area for Go is 26.82p and peak rate 29.82.

I've just ring today and although the standing charge is 26p the unit rate is nearly 42p so I'll be sticking with my current rate
Are you sure that's on Go?

All their prices are available on their website and the Go rates are nowhere near that at the moment.

I agree wit Ozzie, those rates sound high (and wrong) unless they've gone up in the last couple of days. They mailed me the rates I quoted at the end of last week.

When I emailed at the beginning of the week I received the following:

Flexible Octopus:

£208.93 per month

£2,507.12 per year

Electricity:

Unit rate p per kWh 28.01

Standing charge p per day 41.98

Gas:

Unit rate p per kWh 7.34

Standing charge p per day 27.22

and our cheapest fixed tariff for you would be:

Octopus 10M Fixed:

£301.74 per month

£3,620.82 per year

Electricity

Unit rate p per kWh 41.78

Standing charge p per day 24.38

Gas

Unit rate p per kWh 12.80

Standing charge p per day 26.10

I am assuming the flexible rate is likely to just go up currently

So neither of those are the Go tariff. The first is Flexible Octopus and the second is Octopus 10M Fixed, as you say.

Go is the EV tariff which gives you a cheaper window overnight.

If you aren't already an Octopus customer you may need to go onto a regular tariff for a month before switching to Go - I remember some palaver like that when I switched from Agile to Go.

That's what the guy on the phone told me
I think you have them the wrong way around and definitely doesn't sound like 'Go' as you should have had two different tariffs (maybe 3 if you asked for the 5 hour version)
