MG4 Trophy LR
Hello, I've only had my MG4 TROPHY since September 2024.
When I first got it, it would charge up to 282 miles on my home charger. But in the last 3 weeks it's only charging to 232/238 miles.
Does anyone else have a similar problem and do you think theses something wrong with my car?

Normal for Winter

If it's showing 100%, 232/238 is pretty good for this time of year.

Thank you for your quick reply, thanks for your help.

John
If you've come from an ICE car previously (which is probable given the nature of your question) ... your last ICE car also got a worse range in winter, it's just that an ICE car is so inherently energy inefficient that the drop in efficiency is much less noticeable. :)

You will have had a similar experience with an ICE car, every time you fill the tank it tells you a different maximum range. Same with electric cars, they are guessing how far you can travel based on different things. Previous driving style, ambient temperature (bigger impact on the battery's ability to convert electricity to motion), what mode the car is set to, you will notice the total miles change as you cycle through them.

My previous ICE car would give me range estimations between 300 and 450 miles depending on how it had been driven in the previous 50-100 miles.

The number of miles shown is sometimes referred to as a GOM - Guess O Meter as that what it is doing, making an educated guess.

I’m in Scotland between -4°C to 4°C is pretty standard November through February. I seem to lose 20% range in winter, so with charging to 80% that’s a 64% range. I think it’s worth having a max 2/3rds winter figure in your head when thinking about current electric car ranges, and what electric car you want.

As others have quite correctly said the temperature has a huge impact due to increased energy use especially on short trips. Battery heating is a huge drain and best used only when really needed. My LFP SE showed 210 when delivered Nov 2023, 230 in summer 2024 and now 160 in Dec 2024. It will vary a lot on driving style too. Personally I enjoy using ABRP with a OBD for a more accurate and moderate average and range estimate. I get 280-300Wh/mi or around 3.2 mi/kWh [was kWh/mi] which means my 51kWh battery can give me a real range of between 150 - 200 or so miles. As you get to know the car this simply supports what you know. All good.

You will find that because of the temperature, batteries always lose their charge value. You will also find that during the summer your consumption will be around the 4 to 5 miles per kWh. Now in winter about 2 to 3 miles per kWh. Also when driving always select eco drive mode it all helps.

300Wh/mile=3.33miles/kWh.
3.2kWh/mile=0.31miles/kWh
Just saying.

Have you tried zeroing the total mileage on the odometer and then rechecking ?

This only wipes the memory of the car/GOM and basically makes the estimate less accurate. It won’t give you any extra range.

It’ll reset itself after 1000 miles 100 hours in the “accumulated total” screen anyway.

@GlobalHealer69, there is nothing wrong with your car. As you have driven it the car computes how many miles per kWh you are achieving and estimates your mileage based on that. In winter the battery system is not as good at delivering power as in summer so the miles per kWh goes down. Additionally, you are likely to be using the HVAC which takes some of the battery capacity. In summer your 100% mileage will return.

Resetting the GOM effectively removes the car's calculations which leads to an overestimate of the achievable mileage.
