Badge light stays on

Solution
The charging process is to charge the battery until full, then to balance the charge between each cell in the battery - this is why the badge light changes.
You’ll find a tiny charge (trickle) is used to do this, until your charger will state the charge is complete. It can take a number of hours to do this - mine takes around 3 hours but then I’m a low mileage user and don’t charge regularly, so YMMV…

That is a different problem!
I’ve used the included charger - the granny charger as it’s called. Do yo charge until the badge light goes off or do you stop when the car says it’s charged? Do you charge until 100% or stop before it’s fully charged? I must admit, I’ve never heard of the badge light staying on when disconnected and closed…🤔

It may well be completely normal. My guess is that it is continuing balancing at zero charging current. So you might end up at 99.8% SoC, where it would have been at 100.0% if you left the charge plug in and turned on.

I think mine is currently at 50% or so. Maybe I'll try disconnecting the 12V battery to reset everything? I'm concerned the car is not going to sleep properly and it's draining the 12V battery.

Update: today I put the car on charge and the MG badge doesn't glow or pulse while charging. But when I stop charging and close the port, the light comes back on again!

The MG badge which illuminates and fades when charging now remains on! I am concerned that it will flatten the battery after a while! Anyone know how to fix this issue please?
Terry - out of interest did you have any issues with your charger RCBO tripping out before this issue started happening? We had a few interrupted charges, due to a faulty charger RCBO which I've now replaced, but it did mean the charge process cut out a few times from the charger end (hence ungraceful, from the car's perspective). I'm wondering if this is related to the incorrect badge illumination.

That's an interesting point. Stopping the charge mechanically under load causes a big spike of voltage, which could damage the On Board Charger (OBC). I imagine that the badge lights are controlled by the EV Charge Controller (EVCC), but it might be the OBC.

@Terry Howard, do you routinely switch off your AC charging at home with a timer on the AC supply? That could cause similar damage. It seems unlikely to me, but could explain it.

I'm guessing that the car actually will turn off normally, after some 10-20 minutes, and at that point, I'd expect the badge LEDs to go out and no longer drain the auxiliary battery. But if the LEDs don't go out, a simple solution would be to disconnect the cable to the LEDs. Unless that also disconnects the switch that senses the charge port being open. Hopefully the fault can get fixed under warranty, so this would be a short term workaround.

It looks as though in Mrwobling's case, some 'toggle' switch has got confused.
Maybe a "12V battery disconnect" would help?

Update - disconnecting 12V battery for 30 seconds did not seem to immediately solve the issue, however after opening and closing the charging port, the issue is no longer occurring. I've not tried charging again since but will report back after the next charge.

Maybe worth investing in something like this.

Negative terminal battery disconnect, just twist the green part to disconnect or connect.

Negate the need to carry the 10mm spanner :)

That's a good shout - I was actually going to buy a spare 10mm spanner to keep in the glove box too!

Yeah i just ordered a ZS EV today, i think i am going to buy and retrofit one of these.

Make it easier, even for the wife to do this in a pinch.

I showed it to her so now she's mad at me...probably because i told her she should get a tattoo just below the navel with the text thats on the green knob ;)

Update - I've now completely changed the 12V battery for a new one and the issue is still happening - front MG badge lamp stays on any time the charge flap is closed, but goes off as soon as it is opened.
