So, I got the MG5 on lease through work but opted for a shorter lease term on the basis that in a couple years new cars will be coming online that are a significant improvement over the MG5 and, importantly, will cost the same if not less.

Next year my car is due to be returned and I am really liking the look of the Kia EV3 which seems to have some serious real world range (actual Real Life (tm) 300+ mile range) and costing about the same as the Mg5 did brand new (and its not Chinese made) and quite a few glowing reviews from well established reviewers.

Seems we will be spoilt for choice next year as technology actually improves in EV's :)

Ah, I thought you were talking about a car being provided by your employer.

Looking for a 2nd ev now. Second hand market seems has some good options now.
Very undecided on what in the 10-15k price bracket and more range than the mg5. Kona is seeming a front runner at the minute.

I have a 2022 Kona bought earlier this year. I like it a lot, the larger battery version which I have does a true 300 miles easily in summer normal driving. I did a 230 mile day trip to Blyth in September from Leeds which included approx 80 miles each way at maintained 70 mph on the motorway (A1M Wetherby to Newcastle stretch and back for anyone wondering where there is a motorway you can maintain this speed) and returned home with a range remaining of 34 miles. So even at motorway speeds range is good. On a normal summer drive south with the motorways and roadworks in that direction I can reach the south coast without recharging. Heat pump was an extra on these and mine doesn't have one so suffers a bit in winter but range is still good seeing 230 plus miles with the heater on permanently.

Downsides, rear seat space and boot is small. We are OK with this as there are only 2 of us and we can easily fit what we need in, but not for 2 adults and 2 teenage children. :) Beware the 4th year service, requires a coolant change and is expensive (c £500).
If you need larger then the e-Niro is an excellent choice and it has only a bit less range.
If you want any more info on Gen 1 Konas just ask.

For my budget looking at a 20 or 21 reg so good to know about the service. Trying to work out what the difference is to give the 21 reg a 300 range and the 20 a 280 range and if there’s a difference in real life?

According to EV database the real world figures are the same. Have a look here

For checking all second hand superseded or discontinued models check here.

https://ev-database.org/ and in the top right corner where it has a drop down for 'all vehicles', change that to 'Discontinued Models'

We looked long and hard at the kona, my best friend has one and efficiency wise it’s amazing.
We only discounted it because of the boot size

Boot size is deffo a problem for a family car but for the two of us it's more than ample.

Totall

Totally brilliant cars and the gom
Is scary accurate
Indeed, GOM is really accurate. After a couple of weeks of just town pootling about did a day trip to Southport, c80 miles each way including M62 and M61 at motorway speeds, so different type of driving and my GOM on arrival was just 1 mile out compared to distance actually travelled. No idea how it does it but as you say...spooky. :D

What are the prices you have on the mg5 and the Kia ?

I also swapped my MG company car for a second hand Kona but mine is a 2020 model I get way better mileage even though I'm driving the same if not more heavy footed on the motorway.
I had my 4 year service this week but the coolant was changed last year on a recall so it wasn't horrendously expensive.
Whilst killing time I had a chat with one of the Sales guys and he told me the 2023 version of the Kona is much larger and from appearances the boot and back seat space is larger than my version. Not as big as an MG5 but as I read they've killed the model off it is a good replacement. Plus it has physical AC buttons!

With regard the boot space it is fine for my daily stuff, moving the 4 year old between home and Nursery/Grandparents and going to site with all of my PPE, the boot lip is level so makes a comfortable boot (footwear!) change seat.
However the car was crammed full with the wife and I with overnight bags and all the Christmas presents.
I didn't even try for taking the three of us and my Dad for four nights to centre Parcs, I just borrowed my in-laws Navarra pick up with a hardtop load cover.

BTW Merry Christmas all!

Yep replacement new Kona is a lot larger.

EV3 actually is Chinese made afaik but it's still my choice going forward.
Yes, there is nothing wrong with being Chinese made; most of the best manufactured goods (as well as most of the worst goods) are Chinese made. But for best results, there has to be someone managing the quality ongoing, and paying for things to get corrected where necessary. If the company doing that managing is Kia, then it will probably get done, and you'll probably pay accordingly.

The Kia EV3 is initially being produced in South Korea at one of Kia's plants. Kia is also planning to produce the EV3 at its Slovakian plant, which will be its only strategic base in Europe.

Cheers for that, I'm sure I heard China on a video somewhere. Either way, barring developments :) it's the car I'll be buying when my time with the MG5 is up.

All reviewers reports are full of praise for it.
