It's not a bug, it's simply omitting certain functions from cheaper models to urge people to buy the more expensive ones. This has been going on forever. All Volkswagen oder Audi models are equipped for cruise control functionality since the nineties, but it's only enabled if you pay for it...

It doesn't lock you in, it locks the others out. The inside door handles open any door at any time - even with auto lock engaged. This issue has nothing to do with the auto lock feature.

Even older Tesla models are perfectly suitable for everyday use. They still receive OTA updates and to be honest, a five year old Model S is still better than most of today's offerings. If there was a supercharger on my route to work I would have bought an old Model S with free supercharging...
