driving

Driving is the controlled operation and movement of a vehicle, including cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses, and bicycles. Permission to drive on public highways is granted based on a set of conditions being met and drivers are required to follow the established road and traffic laws in the location they are driving. The word driving, has etymology dating back to the 15th century and has developed as what driving has encompassed has changed from working animals in the 15th to automobiles in the 1800s. Driving skills have also developed since the 15th century with physical, mental and safety skills being required to drive. This evolution of the skills required to drive have been accompanied by the introduction of driving laws which relate to not only the driver but the driveability of a car.
The term "driver" originated in the 15th century, referring to the occupation of driving working animals like pack or draft horses. It later applied to electric railway drivers in 1889 and motor-car drivers in 1896. The world's first long-distance road trip by automobile occurred in 1888 when Bertha Benz drove a Benz Patent-Motorwagen from Mannheim to Pforzheim, Germany. Driving requires both physical and mental skills, as well as an understanding of the rules of the road.
In many countries, drivers must pass practical and theoretical driving tests to obtain a driving license. Physical skills required for driving include proper hand placement, gear shifting, pedal operation, steering, braking, and operation of ancillary devices. Mental skills involve hazard awareness, decision-making, evasive maneuvering, and understanding vehicle dynamics. Distractions, altered states of consciousness, and certain medical conditions can impair a driver's mental skills.
Safety concerns in driving include poor road conditions, low visibility, texting while driving, speeding, impaired driving, sleep-deprived driving, and reckless driving. Laws regarding driving, driver licensing, and vehicle registration vary between jurisdictions. Most countries have laws against driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Some countries impose annual renewals or point systems for driver's licenses to maintain road safety.

My initial thoughts on One Pedal Drive

Had my Trophy for a few weeks now and decided to give one-pedal driving (OPD) a go over the weekend. My initial reaction was to hate it—mostly because I kept lifting my foot too high off the throttle, causing the car to slow down very quickly. I forced myself to keep using it, and over time, I...

MG HS PHEV 2025 one pedal driving mode?

Does the MG HS PHEV 2025 have a one pedal driving mode? If so, is it strong enough to bring the car to a complete stop without using the brake pedal?

When driving over bumps in the road, I feel a sudden impact from the wheels to the steering wheel.

I have a MG EHS 2022 with 76,000km on it and lately when I drive over bumps in the road I feel a sudden thud from the wheels to the steering wheel. It does it sometimes, not all the time. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks

    Car Lost Power While Driving

Hi All, Looking for some advice - have seen similar problems posted but nothing exact. I have a 21 plate ZS EV. My wife was driving home from work last night when HV Battery warning came on. The car had plenty of range at the time. 10 mins later, while she was on a motorway slip road, the car...

    MG5 2023 Trophy Winter Mileage

I am wondering if the driving range when charging at home to 100% and the outside temperature is around -1 via 3 pin 13amp should be more than 145 miles. I have found the last 2 times I charged overnight the range was 140 and 145 miles. Many thanks.

    Brake issue?

Hi All, I have just come back from a day out with kids and wife at an animal sanctuary about 30 miles away. Trip out fine. I drove. On way back I was exhausted half way through journey so swapped with wife (who rarely drives it as it’s my commuting car). I dozed off. When we got back I woke up...

One Pedal Driving post s/w update

Hello Everyone, I have an Oct 2022 MG4 Trophy (so one of the early UK cars). I was running R33 software for an age and after a protracted battle got my dealer this week to upgrade, under warranty, to what I now know to be ver R63. I was especially looking forward to one pedal driving being an...

One pedal driving interaction with ABS on slippery slope

Today I was on a street with steep downhill incline, I was using one pedal drivimg, but when the ABS kicked in the car just lunged forward (cancelling the hold of the car from the motor) until I pressed the brake pedal. Scary! I recommend not using one pedal driving on slippery downhill...

RHD TJA seems to prefer going left

Hi all, The other day I noticed that whenever I’m driving with ACC and TJA active, which I really only use on the freeway, the car seems to always try and follow the off ramps. Whenever I pass one the steering wheel clicks as it tries to gently veer left and I hold it centred. It feels like the...

    XPower in the Snow

Just wondering how XP owners have found driving their cars in the snow this weekend ? I've not had to go out yet but our local road is covered in a fair few inches and cars have been sliding around a bit ! IIRC the AWD only works in forward gear.

    Driving in snow

So, nice bit of snow tonight, went out for a drive with summer tyres (some fairly low on thread) and the car was immaculate, top marks ❄️🙂 - until I had to go up the slope on my drive to park the car and top it up for tomorrow ... There was no space to gain a bit of speed and continue up the...

Loss of power due to empty battery / uphill driving / acceleration / overtaking

On the way home, I once again had to experience that the car in normal mode with ACC did not accelerate when overtaking. The battery was empty except for 2 bars and it no longer accelerated, and that was at 110 km/h. If something like that happens on a country road, it can quickly become...

Inaudible navigation volume while driving at speed 110 km/hr in MG 5 luxury EV

While driving at the speed of 110 km/hr in MG 5 luxury EV the navigation volume is not audible. I guess it's may be due to noise inside the cabin. If it is then it's a big issue. Please help me rectify this issue.

    It's Arrived

Still on R30, but has been absolutely faultless in the 500miles i've driven since it arrived yesterday. (what infotainment version got the update A/C layout and drop down menu?) Haven't really noticed the LKA or any of the driving aids coming down the A701/M6 so hopefully it's not out to get...

    100% SoC now shows 449 km (280 miles) ??

More as a comment because when we took delivery of the MG4 64 kWh is was at 100% and showed 420 km. Now, 2,500km later and charging to 100% (prior to a long journey tomorrow) it's risen to 449 km. Maybe not a large difference but I am wondering whether the MG 4 is building up a picture of our...

Delayed battery level indication when driving?

I’ve had my MG4 LR for 8 months now from new and do a 65 mile round trip 3 times a week, usually charging to 80% overnight.
