electric vehicle

An electric vehicle (EV) is a vehicle that uses one or more electric motors for propulsion. It can be powered by a collector system, with electricity from extravehicular sources, or it can be powered autonomously by a battery (sometimes charged by solar panels, or by converting fuel to electricity using fuel cells or a generator). EVs include, but are not limited to, road and rail vehicles, surface and underwater vessels, electric aircraft , and electric spacecraft. For road vehicles, together with other emerging automotive technologies such as autonomous driving, connected vehicles, and shared mobility, EVs form a future mobility vision called Connected, Autonomous, Shared, and Electric (CASE) Mobility.EVs first came into existence in the late 19th century, when electricity was among the preferred methods for motor vehicle propulsion, providing a level of comfort and ease of operation that could not be achieved by the gasoline cars of the time. Internal combustion engines were the dominant propulsion method for cars and trucks for about 100 years, but electric power remained commonplace in other vehicle types, such as trains and smaller vehicles of all types.
Government incentives to increase adoption were first introduced in the late 2000s, including in the United States and the European Union, leading to a growing market for vehicles in the 2010s. Increasing public interest and awareness and structural incentives, such as those being built into the green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, are expected to greatly increase the electric vehicle market. During the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns reduced the number of greenhouse gases in gasoline or diesel vehicles. The International Energy Agency said in 2021 that governments should do more to meet climate goals, including policies for heavy electric vehicles. Electric vehicle sales may increase from 2% of the global share in 2016 to 30% by 2030. As of July 2022 the global EV market size was $280 billion and was expected to grow to $1 trillion by 2026. Much of this growth is expected in markets like North America, Europe, and China; a 2020 literature review suggested that growth in the use of electric 4-wheeled vehicles appears economically unlikely in developing economies, but that electric 2-wheeler growth is likely. There are more 2 and 3 wheel EVs than any other type.

    Quick discharge

Had a bit of an odd occurrence the other day, I left work with 45% charge and 84 mile range, during the journey I noticed that the charge was dropping dramatically and after 23 miles was at 12%! Forcing me to stop at a rapid charger. Anyone else had this type of sudden reduction, and no I wasn't...

    MG4 hasn’t charged overnight again…

Please help I’m at my wits end with this car. I can live with the bugs that make the radio erratic, the travel news twice the volume of the radio, the Apple play not work on occasion, the black screen after adjusting the temperature and trying to return to Gmaps, I concede that some of these...

STATS since I bought the car in June 2023. 4200 miles covered. There may be errors!

My previous vehicle a diesel SUV cost about £60 to fill for 440 miles range. The EV costs about £10 home charging for same range and about £40 at a Rapid motorway charger, or £20 at Tesco etc.

    Update re. Looped electricity situation

I have been using my EVSE since getting my car in November 22, with the okay given by Western Power, even though my property is looped through to the next house (all detached, and not even adjacent). My neighbour, quite understandably, did not want their driveway dug up, when it was of no...

MG4 1 year on, the good and bad

Ok, so lets do good stuff first. We got the orange trophy edition, all bells and whistles. This car is a dream to drive, excellent handling and goes like ? of a shovel. Have driven a LOT, in all kinds of weather (blizzard weather in Sweden too) and it’s been great. Really can’t fault it in...

    Charging regime

Quick question, how often do you charge your car? We only have a granny charger so far (outdoor socket, wired directly into our consumer unit) and it charges around 15% each night during the cheap rate 5 hour slot. This means several consecutive nights to get the battery to 80%. If we have no...

    MG4 intermittently will not start

I'm having a problem with my MG4 51 excite (Australian) where it sometimes refuses to start. I unlock, get in, dashboard lights up with what seems to be every possible warning. It doesn't display a battery SoC (just ---%). I cannot put it in drive or reverse, but neutral/P works. I also cannot...

Bad experiences with Electroverse and Credit cards - things to watch out for!

Contactless payments only work if the total amount of contactless transactions made is less than £300. As soon as you go over this , the card needs to be inserted and pinn'd to reset the limit. Fine when in a shop etc but at a charger that only has a contactless reader, the card cannot be used...
  11. Satnav sorted

A couple of months ago my satnav in my 2021 mk1 SR stopped working, would start to load then just stop. Although I use Android Auto for most journeys I like to have the built in speed limit 'nag' active. Tried all the usual resets to no avail and the local dealer didn't have any luck either...

    Newbie

Hi Everyone, I'm picking up my new MG 4 EV next Saturday. This is my first electric vehicle. I have a couple questions if that is ok. I will need to buy a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging cable. Is it worth buying 32amp, 22 kw 3 phase cable and can I use it with my MG 4 EV. The garage is trying to...

    First road trip tomorrow

Going on our first road trip in the MG4 tomorrow. Heading to Tauranga from Auckland, only about 220km, but the first time we'll be driving for any length of time on the open road. Around 100km of motorway, and the rest 80-90km/h road. Xmas holiday traffic will no doubt affect travel time though...

My lovely faultless MG5 was destroyed in the fire at Luton Airport, only 11 months old. So, as a real MG fan, I thought… let’s buy exactly the same again as it was a really good car. My current one is a total nightmare… took delivery with 14 miles on the clock. I rejected after only 13 days...
