tyres

A tire (North American English) or tyre (Commonwealth English except Canada) is a ring-shaped component that surrounds a wheel's rim to transfer a vehicle's load from the axle through the wheel to the ground and to provide traction on the surface over which the wheel travels. Most tires, such as those for automobiles and bicycles, are pneumatically inflated structures, which also provide a flexible cushion that absorbs shock as the tire rolls over rough features on the surface. Tires provide a footprint, called a contact patch, that is designed to match the weight of the vehicle with the bearing strength of the surface that it rolls over by providing a bearing pressure that will not deform the surface excessively.
The materials of modern pneumatic tires are synthetic rubber, natural rubber, fabric, and wire, along with carbon black and other chemical compounds. They consist of a tread and a body. The tread provides traction while the body provides containment for a quantity of compressed air. Before rubber was developed, the first versions of tires were simply bands of metal fitted around wooden wheels to prevent wear and tear. Early rubber tires were solid (not pneumatic). Pneumatic tires are used on many types of vehicles, including cars, bicycles, motorcycles, buses, trucks, heavy equipment, and aircraft. Metal tires are still used on locomotives and railcars, and solid rubber (or other polymers) tires are still used in various non-automotive applications, such as some casters, carts, lawnmowers, and wheelbarrows.
Unmaintained tires can lead to serious hazards for vehicle and vehicle operators, ranging from flat tires which can lead to damage to the vehicle, to blowouts, where tires explode during operation. The manufacture of tires is often highly regulated for this reason. Because of the widespread use of tires for motor vehicles, tire waste is an extremely large portion of global waste leading to widespread need for tire recycling, through both mechanical recycling and reuse , such as for crumb rubber and other tire-derived aggregate, and pyrolysis for chemical reuse, such as for tire-derived fuel. Waste tires, if not recycled properly or burned, can release toxic chemicals into the environment. Moreover, normal use of tires produces micro-plastic particles that contain these chemicals that both enter the environment and affect human health.

New front tyres at 20,000miles ZS EV Any Suggestions on the tyre to fit?

So, the front ones look pretty low, though still legal apparently. All this snow this week makes me want to change the front ones now. Anyone any experience of which type, brand might suit the 2020 EV best. I think grippy in the wet, more important than speed performance, Any suggestions...

    Tyres (original fit)

I have just changed my original tyres on the front only 21k miles and fronts close to limit, rears still 69% tread depth i.e. 6mm. This is interesting to the point the rears should be good 60k without issue this is a god distance and does not lend its self to the rhetoric "the tyres are not...

MG4 Standard tyres are seriously dangerous!

When we first got our MG4 the tyres seemed OK however after 3000 miles it's become apparent all is not well. In anything other then perfect dry conditions it's like driving on ice all the time and not in a fun way! I'm going to speak to the dealer tomorrow however after just 3000 miles they are...

Not EV specific but I know there are several members in the area. Can anybody recommend a trustworthy place to get new tyres fitted. My front two need replaced soon. Dealer will do it but that doesn't feel like the best use of my money.

Standard Load Cooper Tyres At New

I'm looking for some help on clarifying tyre specification for our 71 reg 5 Long Range that came with Cooper tyres. We just had a puncture that required a new tyre. It was noticed that the original tyres are Standard Load which I'm told would be an Mot failure. I've replaced the fronts with...

    MG4 tyres

My 2 week old MG4 has Continental Premium C tyres fitted and apart from stating 'Extra Load' on the sidewall I can't see anything about being specifically for EVs. According to this article in Car Magazine (EV tyres: which electric car tyres are best?) EVs have different requirements due to...

    Scraping noise from front tyres

Got a loan 5 while my 4 is in the dealer (again). It’s new, but the old model. Noticed a scraping noise from the front tyres/wheels when halfway between straight and full lock. Forward or reverse. I’m not reporting it, not my car and not my problem, just curious as to what it would be. It’s got...

Just replaced my front tyres as MOT coming up. Down to 1.8mm after 55K miles of hard driving. I was rather happy with that. Rear tyres still going strong.

    Inflating tyres and wheel trims

Today I decided to try and manually check the tyre pressures. The TPMS has been reporting one tyre with a pressure consistently higher than the others. Simple, I thought. I have a pump with a digital pressure gauge so I'll hook it up to the one tyre and adjust the pressure. However I found it...

    Archived Mg Zs Ev tyres

I have a primacy three and a primacy four both sized for Mark one ZS EV cars which have both done very nominal mileage and have no damage to them. Either of them have done less than 1500 miles. If anyone wants either or both of them they are £35 each plus carriage, depending on where to...

    MG4 Tyres

Does anyone know what tyres the MG4 is being shipped to the UK with? I noticed on the digital launch video that the car there was shod with Continental tyres, but didn't get to see the size and rating. I have seen quite a bit of debate on various forums about so-called EV rated tyres, but as...

MG ZS EV brakes and tyres after second service

My ZS EV has just had it's second service and after driving 14000 miles the tread has only reduced by 2mm. There is also very little wear and tear on brake pads etc. This shown other ways in which an electric vehicle can be cheaper to run in more ways than one. I was well impressed.
