Hi all, looking around for just a 2m long type 2 cable as that would suit me better.
Found a couple of manufacturers on line but unsure of quality.
Anyone have (or know of one) that is good quality and works well with the 5 fl?

I have experienced multiple times were chargers are in odd places so personally wouldn't contemplate anything less than a 5m.

We have one of these and it has been trouble free.

If you want one that could charge at 11kW on the right charger then you will want a 3-phase cable. 2M is incredibly short though so maybe you are only thinking of using it with your home charger.

2m would suit me as will only be using the car locally.
I have a hybrid MG3 for any journeys further afield.
Home charger and chargers at work are easily accessible. I’m fortunate that I can charge at work for free too.?

I have a similar question - there are cables on Amazon , some say 16amp others 32amp which one do I need for mg5 (old style) ?

I'm learning fast (brought a used MG5 a few days ago). If I want to use the 22kw (untethered) chargers they have in supermarket carparks, then I do I need a specific cable for that?

If I buy a cable rated for 22kw then I assume it will also work on a charger at 11kw, or 7.5kw. is this correct?

Also, it seems all the "fast chargers" are tethered... Is this also correct?

Finally I charged (granny cable) the MG5 exclusive to 85% . It should have the long range battery (240 miles) but says range on 85% is only 140 miles. Any ideas what's going on?

Range - It looks at how much power it used for the last few miles and then estimates how far the car will go on the power that it has available. If you drive fast uphill and into the wind in the cold the car will show a very low range, downhill with the wind behind at 40mph and the range will go up a lot.
"Fast Chargers" - its ridiculous but the chargers you get at home are called "fast chargers". The ones with the big DC cable are called "rapid chargers" and are always tethered. Most of the time people can work out what was intended.
A 22kw cable will be able to do everything you need it to do and may even be useful for your next car if it can do more than 7kw. Don't buy an 11kw cable it wont work well with your car and I think it is intended for the US where they can have 3 phase 110v at home.

Thank you Kevin. This is really good information.

It feels like we really need the "rapid charge" infrastructure I. The UK to mature a bit more.

I assume all motorway services have a good provision - I'll try it out at the end of this week I have a longer trip to do.
And I'll buy the 3 Phase 22kw type 2 cable. As you mentioned it may be a little more future friendly.

I have an MG5 pfl long range. Back in January 2022, I purchased a 2 m cable from e-zoomed. It serves me well for home charging on my non-tethered wall charger. The cable is rated 7.4kW, 32 amp and comes in black, blue and yellow. Here's the link to black cable: Custom-Made Single-Phase EV Charging Cable Type 2 to Type 2 (2m to 50m, 7.4 kW, 32 amp, Black) - Free Delivery - Ezoomed
Price today (27-1-25) £99.95. I've very pleased with my cable and have no hesitation in recommending it.

First thing to understand is phases. Basically you can either have one or three wires in the cable powering the car where one wire is single phase (1ph) and three wires is three phase (3ph). You are highly unlikely to have three phase at home.

The current/amperage that a cable supports is per phase. So a 16A cable could either be 3.7kW (single phase) or 11kW (three phase), and a 32A cable could be 7.4kW (1ph) or 22kW (3ph)

What this means is if you buy an 11kW cable (which is 16A and 3ph), it will only get 3.7kW on a 32A single phase ccharger (rated to 7.4kW) since the current rating is for each individual phase wire in the cable.

On the other hand, a single phase 32A cable can only pull 3.7kW from an 11kW 3ph charge point, since it is only rated to give out 3.7kW per phase and the cable only has one phase.

The car itself (at least the FL, the PFL is different) can do 7kW single phase or 11kW three phase, so whilst from that it would seem silly to get a 22kW cable, from what I put above you can see why it's the obvious choice if you need to AC charge a lot, so that you can get 11kW at 11kW charge points and 7kW at 7kW charge points.

This is the info I needed and I've already ordered a 22kw (thankfully) which should allow me use of the 11kw AC chargers.

Thanks for all the input , this is an education I wasn't expecting to need , but now realise it's critical - and very much appreciated.

But, your profile says you have an MG5 Exclusive, which is the pre-facelift model. If that is correct you will not be able to charge at 11kWh on any AC charger; its maximum is 7, minus losses in the cable etc.

I'll try it out and see how much it can pull through the 3 phase cable. if it maxes at 7kW then so be it. My partner has just purchased a used Citroen Zoe so maybe it'll work with that.
