I have recently taken delivery of a 2023 HS PHEV. It came with a granny charger but it’s very short and my socket is quite far away, so I ordered a longer 3rd party cable. It said it worked with all EVs and PHEVs using the type 2 standard.
Tried it for the first time and the car just won’t connect. It shows ‘connecting’ on the dash, but this never changes to charging and even after an hour it’s delivered no charge. The cable itself has a display which just shows ‘ready’ and that no current is flowing to the car. It also doesn’t make the buzzing noise when I plug it into the car like my MG one does. It is a variable power output cable but it is set to 10A which is what I believe the MG one is.

The car works fine with the cable provided by MG, and with a cable plugged into a car charging port. I have also tried some ‘troubleshooting’ I’ve found on here, like holding to plug into the car firmly whilst it connects, locking the car, plugging he charger in first before plugging into the car, etc.

I suppose my question is, does the HS support third party cables? (I don’t see why it wouldn’t).
And does the HS support a lower rate of charging? E.g. 6-8A?

One thing to try is on pushing the plug hold the plug until you here the hand shake you may find taking the weight of the cable the hand shake will happen as the two top pin are the are for communication between the car and the charger. It this will not work can you return it. Was it off eBay.

Hi!
Thanks for your reply. Yes I tried that a few times, but it doesn’t do anything. It doesn’t do the buzzing thing where it locks the charging port, and just shows ‘connecting’ then goes blank.
Think you’re right, time to return.
It was from Amazon.

Could I recommend using EV-extras.com you can speak with them and check it will work cost more but should be better quality

I bought an e-S1mple 10metre cable off Amazon. Works fine.
you could try a heavy duty extension cord plugged into the mg supplied charger ? Mine is too far away as well so I use a short ext cord plugged into a WIFI plug on the wall so I can schedule start and finish times.

Like you, I have an HS and found that the cable for home charging is a bit short. My wife has a Renault Zoe equipped with a longer cable. After asking my local MG dealer if it was OK to use the Renault cable (he said it would be fine) I was able to connect and charge successfully.

Hi all. First post, new to the forum. Just adding my twopence worth, new to the car, as in a week last Friday and I too bought a e1-S1mple lead, 7.5m, after reading posts on here as to the supplied lead length, works a treat. Only using granny charger, good enough for both our needs (other half has a 23 plate Corsa school runs) and works a treat, does enough and cannot justify 1K plus for wall charger. Can plug it in and simply operate the isolation switch inside the house for the newly installed socket outside and she works a treat (try to get as much on the EV rate with EDF as I can lol).
