Ah, got you, well it's the law now that all new chargers must come with contactless payment terminals. It'll take a few years for contactless units to replace the older chargers but it will happen.

I recall reading an interesting discussion on the subject in the comments section on The Register. If I can find it I'll post it here. (www.theregister.co.uk is a continual source of entertainment and informed comment. Plus the BOFH - look him up)
Well,I found not just the H2 discussion I was thinking about, but two more as well. Try these:

I suspect hydrogen will be for big commercial vehicles HGV1 and coaches etc, maybe even planes. Batteries for the private car buying public and last mile deliveries,

Nope. It's the simplicity of pay at pump petrol stations vs. the current convoluted situation with EV chargers.

Forget driving in, swiping a debit card, fuelling and away, which is what you'd do for a tabkful of diesel.

With an EV it's will the thing be working? What app do I need? Which of my handful of RFID cards will work? Will contactless be accepted? Will it work? Do I need an app? Do I have to use the website? Have I got a mobile signal? Is there WiFi if not?

IOW: totally unike buying a tank of diesel.
Many EV charging stations accept credit cards, though...

You're right, of course. But unlike petrol stations, not all. Neither do some petrol stations insist on you being in some kind of walled garden.

Why not simply start with the ICE fuelling model and, you know, make it better, instead of 50 fragmented steps sharply backwards

It ain't happened yet. Within the past few days, three brand spanking new Geniepoint 22kW CCS chargers have appeared near me in North Walsham. Guess what? Genie point confirmed as follows:

"Unfortunately our chargers at Bank Loke are not pay as you go. You will either need to set up an account with us or charge via guest. You can download our app via the app store/play store. Alternatively you can also register online, please find the link below."

One could be forgiven for wondering whether any brown envelopes were involved in the decision making process.

Nah. Would never happen.
