Hello everyone,
New to the forum and to the EV cars in general.
Today I saw MG5 SR exclusive 2020 plate with 24k miles on the clock for sale on carsupermarket.
The car was 150 miles away from where I live they offered me to pay £199 fully refundable deposit and they will move it to my local branch within 3 to 5 working days.

I have asked them about the service history the lass on the phone said she will find out and get back to me, so she went away and phones MG, they informed her the car has done 2 services from new and that shouldn't be a problem with the warranty.

I phones MG myself and provide them with the Reg Number, the guy on the phone confirmed what carsupermarket told me but he advised me once I buy the car I will need to put it for a service as it might need the brake fluid changed!

I phoned carsupermarket back told them about the brake fluid service and the agent on the phone said we will get it serviced in the house which I assume he ment within carsupermarket workshop not at the dealer and he will send invoice for the service with the car.

Any advice about the service and the warranty? If the service done by carsupermarket is that OK or it has to be MG dealer?

I still have time and once the car in the local branch I can go and view it and make my mind up, also is there anything else I need to look for ?

Thanks in advance

How old is the car? between 3 and 4 years? With only TWO services? Others on here will be more knowledgeable than me but I was under the impression you had to get the car serviced annually by TIME not mileage. Proceed with caution. Possibly the car will be fine but the warranty may not.

Worth getting what MG said in writing via an email.

Just me being cautious. Others may have a different view.

The car first registered on 01 December 2020 so I would say just over 3 and half years old

The warranty, being based on yearly inspections, would concern me. Proceed with caution - these cars are electronically complicated and I would not wish to take one on without the warranty.

Just my view - sent you a personal message.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I have emailed MG directly hoping to get a clear answer on writing but this what I received from them.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for getting in contact,

Unfortunately, we cannot state if your vehicle is specifically covered under warranty.

This can only be done by an MG dealership as they can get in touch with our warranty team for clarification.

Additionally, we can look to see if it has been serviced by an Mg dealership but cannot see what the state of the battery was after the service was done.

You may need to get in touch with the dealership that had provided the previous service on the vehicle for that answer.

Would you like me to check your vehicle’s service history?

Kind regards,"

" Here is the information regarding your vehicle’s service history:

It looks like it has missed its service date and its last service was on 10/01/23 by MG Luscombe."

So it missed a service on the 30/12/2023

It has 1 year Type A 15k miles service on the 15/12/2021 miles were 8241

Then 2 years Type B 48k miles service on 10/01/2023 miles were 16882

Surely the 2nd service is a 30K not 48k.
It has missed the third service so no 7 year warranty.
Can you contact MG Luscombes?

According to mg email i have received, it says 48k miles 2 years, I thought the same, it should of been 30k not type b 48k

I think you might have dodged a bullet if you walk away.
I would not be willing to buy that car - probably hence the price.

There will be others.

Right so if MG or the Dealer are not willing to put your guarantee in writing the deal is not as good as you hoped. Still worth asking the dealer but they may not think it's worth the trouble as chances are someone else will buy it without asking.

I bought a late '22 FL MG5 Trophy from carsupermarket a few months ago. They said it had had its first service (second one not due yet). I got a printout of the receipt from the MG dealer who sold the car to the previous owner, but no original record of the service. I was told that service records are all electronic and they are available from MG. I was a bit doubtful, but could understand that it was possible. This all took place at the point of payment & collection, so I couldn't really check the real story. However, I did check the MG web site which implied that you can get the service record from your dealer.

I emailed the dealer who did the service / sold the car asking for confirmation, but I have had no reply. I'm a distance from my "local" MG dealer so haven't been to ask them. I'm presuming that, when it goes for service in the autumn, all will be well. But there's a little bit of me which is uncertain - I'd rather have had the hard copies of the service record.

I probably made the mistake of not asking that specific question before doing the deal. With the benefit of hindsight, I should have refused to pay & take delivery of the car unless they got written confirmation from the MG dealer.

I have to say that the rep did an excellent job and answered my considerable list of questions without complaint. But as customers, we don't buy cars every day of the week and it's hard to cover all the bases.

As a navel-gazer, I ALWAYS read terms & conditions line by line to make sure I understand what I'm getting into. I ALWAYS ask for everything in writing. The problem comes in knowing EVERYTHING you need to request in writing.

I was in much the same position . I repeatedly asked Motorpoint if my 22 MG5 had been serviced to which they told me it had . I phoned MG and they said they had no information on the service history and couldn't even find the car on their database . I kept on at Motorpoint to provide me with a service document ,which they eventully provided. Unfortunately what they called a service looked like a pre delivery check to my eyes . Fortunately ,as the car was 11 months old , I immediately booked it in for its first service and managed to have it done on the last day of it's one month grace period .
If the car had been over a year old I don't think I would have pulled the trigger without a written service history confirmation

Here's an interesting one.
When I booked my mot I was told that I needed the 3rd year service to keep it in warranty.
That very same place(recently become an ex mg franchise dealer), has a 21 plate mg5 with 48 months warranty left.

In the details it says it has no service history:unsure:
And a number of other MG's with part service history but stating warranty left.

Where would the buying stand?

For me I have walked away from the car, because I emailed MG on ([email protected]) and the answer was a print out of 2 services but also in the email it said it missed a service on the 30/12/2023, so the car service was overdue by 7 months.
Carsupermarket tried to offer me extended warranty which doesn't include the battery for 3 years, each claim no more than £2k I refused because the HV battery one of the main components of the car.
I would like to thank Caramaddy, Alb, Maskull and everyone gave advice on this post.
