MG4 Air-con & Under tray update

Pretty Much the crux of the problem with MG, some do some don't!

Great if you get a good car/good dealer

Unfortunate but will hopefully get sorted, if you get and iffy car/good dealer.

Crap if you get the ultimate combo iffy car/ iffy dealer
Bang on... but all is not lost if you end up with the lowest level of 'Crap' which is what i did. ☹️
If you then hunt down a good dealer you can move up a level to the 'Unfortunate'.?
Then if your car gets sorted out for you... you can peak out and move to the 'Great' level ?

Agreed but shouldn't need to hunt around, MG should just het their act together and act on the customers behalf with regards issues with dealers

Which dealer are you using pal? I never use the aircon as the noise just irritates and depresses me because it’s should not sound operate the way it does, but with how warm it’s been today had no choice?

The problem is, some of these dealers have only just started to take on MG cars, basically jumping on the bandwagon due the phenomenal success rate the cars are selling and have little or no knowledge of them.
I'm lucky that my dealer has been an MG dealer for many years, so understands the cars, the manufacturer and the customer base and has a technically able crew of MG trained technicians.

I used MG Baylis Gloucester.... to be honest, they have been a cut above the rest. Supported me greatly and their approach to customer care is just as it should be. Even though they are two hours drive from me, I really recommend them and would love to continue to use them. I'll write a review in the dealer experience section in this forum after I have collected my car tomorrow.

This was the ”Smart“ reply I got from MG customer care when I mentioned the forum:

“As I did advise in my original email, we choose not to read or respond on independent forums and we will only deal with enquiries reported through an MG dealership. Again, this is why it is important that the dealership report each and every case when required. So for example, you ae stating that there are 729 comments on an independent forum, however, as of Friday 21st October, when the bulletin was released to the dealership, less than 50 cases had actually been reported to MG by the dealer network.
Independent forums are a minefield for miss communication, Chinese Whispers, breaches of GDPR and non MG owners becoming involved who may be unhappy with the badge/brand as a whole.”

That's all very well, but then when you give your dealer a list of niggles and ask them to pass this on to MG, they say, "well, you'll have to contact MG yourself about all this."

It is not very joined up for sure, though any dealer which said that to me would soon lose my business.

Agree, having spoken to someone with the motoring ombudsman and a lawyer, who deals with consumer law, both advised when dealing with issues with a new car purchase, your complaints, fault reporting and rejection (if it goes that far) should be done with the selling dealership.
The lawyer even pointed out to me that in terms of rejection, the one attempt to repair states the selling garage, so if you had the attempt done at another franchised dealer, say closer to home, they could get you on that technicality if it went to court.
That's if the manufacturer/selling dealer were being really difficult.
He actually said he defends Arnold Clark in these types of case's and has used that technicality himself and the case won't even see the light of day in a court if that condition hasn't been met.

Be mindful of you get offered a more "convenient" dealership to take your fault too

Right, back from Gloucester. Air-con pump replaced and rear under-tray replaced too. Air-con is now much quieter by comparison to what it used to be, but not silent.

This what my under tray now looks like, no warped gaps and no concave bulge. Flat with a straight edge.

You under bonnet AC sound is a tiny bit louder than mine, so that's put my mind at rest that mine's ok thanks.
I did compare mine with SWMBO's MG5 and hers is quieter, but it's a bigger more robust looking pump.
Loving the new undertray, it looks spot on.

I've heard this noise on a few cars now all electric or hybrid vehicles... the Ford Hybrids 2.5 PHEV and HEV both do it after a few mins then is disappears. It was so quick that I tried to record it on my dads car and by the time I jumped back out of the drivers seat it was silent.

I walked past a Tesla Model S this morning it was making the same buzzing noise as our MG4. I asked the owner he said it's done that since he got the car a few years a go, he's had no issues with the AC system but said it doesn't bother him as long as it works... He can't hear it in the cabin but it does buzz continuously the noise doesn't reduce. He got it looked at and they couldn't find a fault.

My buzzing is so loud it's embarrassing I tend to switch it off when pulling up at the school gates to avoid people asking me why my 23 plate MG sounds like an angry bee. Then you get all the Chinese car jokes.

Meeting a friend tonight who has a BMW 530e will see if the Germans have the same problem, if so I can only assume this is a characteristic of certain AC systems... 2 weeks until mine goes in to get looked at ?

If yours sounds like mine in the first set of videos I posted, I would definitely have it looked at. You may be running a pump with no oil in it.

This was mine

Yours sounds better than mine after the fix so i'm hoping it just needs different oil, however it was about 27 degrees when I recorded that so the system was working hard.

Its about 27degrees today where I am so similar conditions I might just give it a go now to see if its still as loud.

That is defiantly too loud. Most definitely go back to your dealer for re-gas at least as there may be no oil in your pump.

Right so the 530e makes a very faint buzzing sound… just by chance we were standing next to a toyota prius the taxi driver was parked up and had his ac on that also made a buzzing sound but in typical toyota fashion it was very refined.

So the buzzing isn’t just an MG thing but what we are experiencing definitely isn’t the norm.

Better sound proofing will also be playing a part but the bmw and toyota were more of a reassuring buzz that the system is working.

Something that springs to mind here, were the cars you listened to all set at the lowest level of AC cooling ?, i.e so all pumps working equally as hard.

I notice that the noise is at its loudest when set to 'LO' and eases as you raise the temp

There's a slight bulge at the front edge towards the nearside rear wheel. But it's so small as to be inconsequential. :)
I knew you'd spot that one :ROFLMAO: (y)

Yes the bmw and my MG were all on ‘LO’ I didn’t check the prius but I know someone who has one I will try and test his over the weekend.

I’ll play around with different temperatures to see if the noise eases at higher temps.

I can also try 520d same model as the 530e year to see if ICE cars react in the same way. My VW touran TSI doesn’t

The school runs have been saved for now thanks @PristDean , increasing the temperature by just 1 degree significantly reduces the buzzing noise and its still freezing cold at 18degrees.

I will still take it in on the 25th to figure out why the buzzing is so loud when set to ‘LO’

Not sure why the video has frozen at 14secs ? excuse the pun will re-upload later.

Set at 18 deg on the screen it will be 13 deg real, so it will be "freezing cold".
I've settled on a 24 deg setting for now, which is 19 deg real and set to auto.
This is cool enough in the heat and warm enough in the cold.
Me and the dog were sat there chillin in the car on the drive yesterday teatime when the temperature was 29 deg outside. I expect we'll do the same today. ?
