When our Leaf had its windscreen replaced recently, the guy replacing it said that there is a special sensor that costs around AU$500 (£260), so he has to transfer it from the old screen and be very careful not to damage it. It seems to be optical in nature but I would guess is separate from the front camera (I don't think that the Leaf had a front camera).I guess it uses the camera also to monitor rain on the windscreen.
In our case, he spent a lot of time trying to get it to work, but gave up after about half an hour. He said it might come good after a few days, but otherwise they would send a specialist to fix it. Remarkably, it did come good after 2 days, and has been fine since.
