Why not display miles travelled per battery % used (M/%U) rather than M/kWh? Then the remaining range displayed can be a calculation of M/%U x remaing_battery_% (M/%R) ? Much simpler and in my experience, accurate.

Thoughts?

either that, or car displays kWh remaining instead of %. remaining.

I agree having to do a conversion between % and kWh is a pain.

If you use m/% you can't compare between vehicles with different batteries.
Sticking to m/kWh is a more universal unit, and is better for comparisons.
So personally I think the % remaining, should be a minor element on the display and kWh remaining the prominent display.

Miles/kWh is the current ‘industry standard’ as per @decrep ‘s post above. It’s also easily measured by ‘real time’ sensors (distance, battery voltage/current).

SoC on the other hand is ‘computed’ and doesn’t seem to be straightforward to determine as battery capacity depends on various external factors.

metric version says kwh/100km, works for me, I know I've got at least 40 reliable kwh without going into the anxiety zone.
 
I err on the safe side, at low SOC, because the range seems to drop faster at the "bottom" of the battery. I get more like 2.5 miles/% overall.
 
I find the % gauge works fine on the SE because it has a roughly 50kwh battery.

This means you can just half (or double i.e. 200%) to switch between kWh and percentage.

If you've got 40% left on your battery, then that is 20kWh energy.

This calculation will be harder to do in your head on the larger battery editions, though I guess it is roughly 2/3rds (time and a half or 150%) for 65kWh and 3/4s (time and a third or 133%) for 77kWh.

Simples!
 
actually, my kwh/100km seems capped at 30. Apparent when ascending bills hills after a fresh reset at the bottom
 
Why not just use the GOM?
I don't find it useful generally, except on a long trip, or when returning home with ever decreasing range.

I'm just saying you can work out other things from the information you are directly given, if you are curious.

A deviation from the original point of the thread I know!

However, if you have an SE doesn't doubling the miles/distance figure give you the M/%GOM one anyway?
 
I’m curious, so what other things are you talking about?
This was originally about efficiency measures/readings.

But you can think about quantities instead - how much energy do I have left in the battery/how much do I need to charge (buy)?

All these things are related, obviously.

Just thought I would share how easy it is to do the multiplication/division when you've got a 50kWh battery.

This is pretty much what I do, it works fine for the MG but some other makes don't show a percentage at all. I've seen a progress bar with no numbers in one Toyota and you could probably do something similar with it after you got used to it.
 
Thinking about it, we assume a minimum 200 miles per full charge and have not had any less so far.
Mostly safe but on rare occasions not so good. I charged the car last January just before a run out and even at 100% charge it estimated a mere 185 miles range. As it happened, I wasn't going anything like that far so it wasn't a worry. This is in the far North of Scotland, and at one point on my journey that day the car recorded the outside temperature as -13°C, so it shows how sensitive EVs are to the cold. Mind you, I can't remember it ever getting that cold in Stockport, so you should be OK...
