Hi.

I bought a used MG5 approximately 5 weeks ago. I’ve just realised that the boot is permanently unlocked even when car is locked from the fob. The alarm does not sound if I manually open the boot with the car locked from the key fob.

I keep some expensive equipment in the boot for my job and obviously need this to be secure.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Is this a settings issue?

Thanks

Solution
It opens automatically if you have the key with you.
Try it with the key well away from the car and you'll find it's locked.
Yes. With the keys in the kitchen I am unable to open the boot on the driveway. Thanks!
You need to be a bit careful with your keys. This behaviour makes it quite easy to open the boot throw your coat in the back and realise too late that your keys were in your coat.

Though at least it shouldn't lock if they're inside the vehicle...

The problem is that the car is already locked. The boot relocks itself when it is closed. Fortunately I had my phone in my pocket so I could unlock the car.
I've got a PFL SR MG5 and it won't let me do that and you can't lock the car if the key is inside. It might be different with other models

If I remember rightly it just instantly pops the boot back open.

Tried it once just to see what would happen*

*I made sure I knew where the other key was first.

Ha! Very wise to adopt that safety net approach, not sure I'd dare otherwise...

That's good to know. We bought a second hand 21 plate SR and only got one key .

My plan was to hop in the boot with the key in my pocket and pull it closed behind me to confirm this one way or the other! I still might, but good to know someone else has gone before me.

You could always test locking the door with the key inside and the window open as a safety net!

Better still, put your partner/wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend (think that covers it) in there with the key

You cant lock the door with the key inside but on the FL you can lock the door, open the boot, put the key in and close the boot.

Can confirm what @dragon2611 says here: on a PFL MG5, car locked:

1. open the boot with key in pocket (boot only unlocks)
2. hop in with key in pocket
3. close boot
4. boot locks and then immediately pops open again, allowing access to the key

I can't comment as to what the newer ones do!

I accidentally tested this last night.

Week away on business overseas driving a LHD petrol manual - quite a challenge. Return to UK and without thinking open boot and put laptop and case in whilst talking to colleague. Go to drivers door and can’t unlock it. “Oh shit” moment when i realised key was in with laptop in the boot…. which hadn’t locked when closed. And relax!

My wife ‘s coat was in the car with her keys in it and I could not lock the car using the door handle although I could with my keys. Took us three days to find that out. Therefore it would appear impossible to lock keys in the car unless there is another set outside. Hope that makes sense.
