I've been reading about the brakes on an electric vehicle, some complaints about rusting pads and discs due to regenerative braking, is it possible to put gear selector in neutral to polish the rust back off the pads and discs?

All you have to do is apply the foot brake a few times and the rust will clear

But I only do short (12) mile journeys
As Billy321 has said, use the foot brake on occasion, where you would normally use regenerative braking. Perhaps you could set the regen to level one for that one journey. That way you will be able to clean the discs. You only need do it occasionally.

Agree with everything said here. I did have a conversation with the sales guy at the local MG dealer yesterday who told me that the main problem is the rear brakes are used much less in braking and although they benefit from being used as suggsted in the posts, the rear discs develop circles of scouring over a period of time and then they are not as effective in emergency braking, but he also said that they do check these on servicing and if there is a problem they will advise you. I personally like the regeneration but I always set off on position 1 until I have used the brakes a few times otherwise you find it will brake and grab very sharply until you use them a few times when you initially set off

I was approaching a traffic light on a dual carriageway yesterday at 70mph when the b'dy lights changed. I stood on the brakes and I was sure they wouldn't stop in time but they did. I was disappointed in the braking performance to the point of a funny smell in the cabin. I will have to use the regen less and brakes more I think.
