Byd Atto 3

Whilst I love my MG5 LR was wondering where to go next and looked into the BYD range and was impressed with the facts:
1.Their sales are up 63% to 66.8b !
2. Sold 641K in June !
3.Price on par or better than MG
4. Toyota are moving to BYD Battery Technology
So... they are launching a RHD in UK this year and will watch with anticipation on which model might suit me etc.

I'm certainly interested in the Atto 3. Hopefully they'll have a good dealer network where you can just go and test drive. Depends on price and warranty really. If it's around 32 - 35k and 6/7 year warranty they'll have a winner.

MG4 is a smaller vehicle and without any fancy features such as glass roof, therefore Atto 3 is fine to be a bit more expensive

Check out this video on the Atto3, it definitely look more premium, although I’m not too keen on the vents, it’s a little fussy.

Very nice, but how they expect to launch in the UK before Xmas is beyond me when they don't even have a dealer network appointed yet.
Their pricing will be critical, but looks like they are not in the same market as MG. They have also been said to be much more expensive on the service and warranty conditions I heard?

That'll be key, and is something that MG are still working on 12 years after the SAIC relaunch. I note that IM who import Isuzu and Subaru are going to be supporting GW with the Ora Cat - I wish them luck as with a couple of exceptions their dealers have appalling reputations. BYD have a reputation of doing everything themselves and the Mitsubishi dealers are in need of products to sell.

That'll be... awkward. My MG dealer also covers Isuzu & Subaru.

The dealer was in New Zealand and if UK dealers are as good that would be good. I notice that the car was right hand drive so what you see is what it will look like. Unlike the RH drive E Megane which has a different and smaller infotainment screen for RH drive UK cars. Life keeps getting more complex!!!

Greetings from Down Under, the land where the BYD Atto 3 is making a big splash indeed. I put my name down for ZS EV back in March, the Standard Range variant because we aren't importing long range to New Zealand. I cancelled that order a month or so back because I am unhappy with buying another MG (a state owned company) after China's aggression in the Taiwan/Korea/Japan area. Coincidentally the BYD Atto became available for test drives about the same time so I took one for a test drive, two test drives actually, and decided to buy one. BYD is not state owned, and in fact the story of the company's founder and still leader is an inspirational one. I've never driven a ZS EV of either generation so I can't personally compare one of those with the Atto but quite a few members of our vigorous Atto Facebook groups have owned 1st gen ZS EV and prefer the driving dynamics of the Atto. My wife has owned an MG HS PHEV since December last and I do very much like that car, it was part of the reason that I originally decided to buy one of the 2nd gen ZS EVs back in March. I shan't try to turn this rant into a review of the Atto, suffice to say that it drives beautifully with better dynamics than our MG HS and to my eye any has better aesthetics than the ZS, and more power to boot. The Atto offers better battery range than New Zealand's ZS EV by virtue of it's 60 kWh battery. BYD do make a smaller 50 kWh version but that is not coming to NZ just yet. The other factor which weighed in my mind was the battery tech. The 50 kWh versions of both the Gen2 ZS EV and Atto both use LFP prismatic cells in their batteries so I consider both brands to be equal in so far as their batteries are concerned. The Atto 60 kWh also uses LFP but MG use NMC in their 70 kWh version which is a bit moot because as stated we don't get that version in NZ - yet. But I would much rather have LFP than NMC. So, I can't say that you should abandon MG and flock to BYD. They're both very fine EVs. My only suggestion is that the Atto is well worth taking for a drive before you decide what to drive.

BYD, quite a bit of drama about that in recent weeks for the Australian market, in sum: they changed their servicing costs at the last minute to relatively high for an EV; and they also changed thier warranty terms to quite a complex list of differeing coverage times for different components. This was despite many customers having put down deposits on what what originally offered as '7 years'. A mass potest ensued, then BYD did a small backflip on servicing costs (for those who already ordered), but the warranty is still higgle-d-piggedly - very, very odd details. MG on the other hand is still straight-up, easy to understand 7 year warranty.

Yup. this side of The Ditch we haven't had the servicing/warranty dramas. The general feeling in New Zealand seems to be that we are being somewhat tucked on servicing costs but we did not have the dreadful shambles that Australia started off with and we retain a fairly straight forward 7 year bumper to bumper warranty with 8 years battery cover broadly speaking. Servicing costs don't have much at all to do with the servicing needs of the car IMO, rather they are set to help make dealerships financially viable. Warranties likewise, these days warranties are more about keeping people locked into the dealer network than protecting the buyer's interests which is why over the past 30 or so years we have seen vehicles go from last century's "normal" 12 months warranty up to today's, what, ten years warranty I think I've seen. Today's cars (Asian cars at least) are bone reliable otherwise the manufacturers would never offer that sort of warranty. Can you imagine a MG-B with a ten year warranty? BYD NZ has just announced a fixed price 3 year $799 warranty for the Atto which isn't too bad when I look around at the likes of BMW and what they charge. And we could always do the servicing ourselves and forgo the warranty if EVs really do have "nothing to service anyway" as the urban legend goes.

The BYD Atto 3 looks a bit pricey to me, expecting a starting price of around £40k - in Australia it undercuts the MG ZS!

Also, I'm not sure how many times I could explain the "Build Your Dreams" badge on the back before getting annoyed?! ?

Be nice to see Triumph back, well for me anyway. I personally would prefer a Triumph badged car than a Rover badged car.

In some respects, it may aid Triumph Motocycles having the badged car back on the roads.
