I put a message out a month or two back as my car cut out twice in the space of ten minutes with an error message of vehicle control system fault. To reset the fault I had to get out the car, lock and unlock. It was fine afterwards. Not so long after it happened again, MG breakdown couldn’t diagnose the issue as they don’t have software to do that so took it to my local MG garage and they couldn’t find what could have caused this and sent me on my way.

This just happened to me on the outside lane of a motorway, the car cut out and come to a standstill within about 30 seconds. Luckily there was enough space on the inside verge for me to get out safely and reset the problem and get back in the car. I’ve driven to a service station but does anyone have any suggestions or point me in a direction if I get fobbed off by MG again about it. I’ve only have the vehicle just over 4 months.

Thanks in advance

Apart from suggesting that there’s a loose connection somewhere (might be 12v battery end, might be somewhere else in the miles of cables running throughout the vehicle), an obvious first thing to try is to update all modules in the car because a software fault is a) more likely and b) more difficult to diagnose

You should not need to get out of the car to power down/up, just press the car icon followed by the safety tab use the power button to power down followed by pressing the brake pedal to power up.

Not sure if this is the right message feed, but a similar thing happened to me on Wednesday, fortunately I was not on a motorway. I was parked on a friend's drive for about an hour. When it came for me to go, the car would not move. A warning sign of a yellow car with an exclamation mark was on the dashboard. I panicked a bit, scratched my head and eventually got out, locked and unlocked and it started fine. Is it something to do with the 12v battery not being charged whilst it is still in ready mode? It might be that I had left it on my drive in ready mode for a while and then not locked it when I got to my friend's house as well.

When does the car charge the 12v battery, if that is not a silly question? I had about 75% charge on the car. The garage mechanic did not seem to have any idea as to why it would do that, when I rang to enquire, and of course the manual is no help at all, it just says there may be a fault. Would be grateful for any advice, even if it is only to make sure I lock the car at all times, in order to switch it off.

It should do it most times: it might be a software bug in your case.

This can happen if the car doesn't power up correctly; it only takes a dropped byte to trigger funny messages.

Was your infotainment screen powered up? If not you can restart it by pressing the Home button for ~10 seconds. When it is powered up, press the Car icon, select the Safety tab and select power off. The car will power down and the driver's screen will go off. Then press the brake to power up the car and the error message will probably not be there.

EDIT: Just re-read your post. Leaving the car powered up should not be a problem and in that state the 12v battery will be being charged from the HV battery. The car monitors the 12V battery level and tops it up when required although some people have had problems. Power-cycling as above seems to correct software glitches.

I had a similar issue about a week ago but seemed to occur after a software update to rectify a non charging problem on CCS.
It was about a week after I found that over 75ish% battery I would slow to a junction using regen and if I put my foot on the brake the HV battery was cut off and the car would go into free wheel mode ( frightened the living daylights out of me the first time).
The same error 'vehicle control system fault' would show up on the screen. I could clear it by powering down the car and starting again. But it occurred several times after. MG had the car, cleared the fault codes and found that 60% of the modules needed reprogramming, so decided to reprogram all of them. I had another strange issue at the same time, when I reset the accumulated miles the car would show something like 70% battery but only 80miles range.
With the reprogramming completed a couple of days ago the car has driven okay (touching wood a lot).
A side issue, was my car was one of the first 2022 cars so I could turn off lane assist and it would stay off, now with all the new programming I have to turn it off every journey although I find it no way near as bad as it used to be.

Thank you very much Martin, that is extremely helpful. I think this forum is amazing, thank you for all your help.

This happened to me too. Going 70mph in fast lane when red system warning light suddenly comes, hazard lights go on and no power. Luckily costed across to hard shoulder. Re set the car and I was off again. 5 mins later happened again. Reset car then i was off again. Thankfully never happened again on the 100 mile trip. This is the first time this has happened and the first time I charged to 100%. I have the normal range Trophy on R59 system software. Had no issues with the car b4 but this has seriously knocked the confidence I had. Driving 260 mile to London on Christmas eve. Any ideas what's wrong

Did this happen before or after R59 was installed?

It doesn't sound like a loose connection to the 12V battery, which has caused problems with cars cutting out, as the hazard lights operated etc. and you were able to coast.

I think you need to get your dealer to have a look. And when you take it in leave a concise note in the car for the technician of what happened. Sometime the reception doesn't pass the full details to the works.
