Charger Cable

I looked into getting a cable for charging from points that do not provide one.

I think what I need is a Type 2 to Type 2, 3 phase 32 amp. I would welcome confirmation or an alternative.

But how long does the cable need to be to access most untethered charging points?

Surely not 10 metres. But how about 3.5 or 2 metres?

I am curious why charging cables are so expensive and why my MG came with a granny-cable (3 pin plug) rather than a cable for faster charging?

Has anyone actually used a granny cable?

I think mine's 3 metres and I've had no problems . As for the price , they're a lot cheaper than when I bought mine a couple of years ago . Seen some on Amazon around £60 ,though I can't comment on the quality

The answer on the cable depends on whether you're talking about FL or PFL, although my own decision was made by not ever wanting to buy another one, so I'd say 3ph 32A (22kW) is the best for future proofing purposes either way.

I believe that PFL is limited to 1ph 32A and the FL to 1ph 32A (7kW) OR 3ph 16A (11kW) , but of course you can only get 32A through a 3ph cable if it's a 3ph 32A cable. There's a real gap in the market for a 1ph 32A cable with the two other phases being 16A, but I don't know if they considered that in making the specification, so probably not possible safely.

As for length, 2m seems very short. I have 5m which often seems inconveniently long, so 3.5m might be a happy middle ground.

Has anyone actually used a granny cable?

There are people here that have only used a granny charger. If you have cheap overnight electricity and you don't ever do more than 50 miles in a day then you wouldn't need anything else.

I bought a 32A 3-phase cable from Amazon when I bought my car 2 years ago. I've used it twice. I'm glad I've got it though.
