Gosh, it's a bit of a saga...

My EO Mini Pro 2 charger seems to have bitten the dust.!

I have used it as a dumb charger for 3 years and 3 months. Recently, I have tried to programme it so that I can have timed charges with Octopus Go.

It took some setting up, but at last it logged on, and I successfully charged the car three times in the dead of night.

However, after those three charges, it would no longer charge. I have reset the charger, and in the end signed out of the EO App.

It now will only charge for several minutes before switching off.

The EO company don't value customers, and don't answer their Support emails.

Alas, the charger is out of warranty, by three months.

Any ideas.......???

I woke up this morning, and checked the car. It had been left overnight with the charger attached, and hey ho, it was fully charged.

Unsure whether this has happened due to the charging schedule, or as a dumb charger....

At least I have a charger now....

Check that it is the EVSE. Either by getting someone else to plug in and / or alternate AC charging your car. Also remove any schedules in the car.

I bang on about it often but a problem that affected me and some others was… Powerline networking kit just having it on in the house = failed charge.

Glad you seem to have some charge though.

All bits aside, if you have the charger there a swap isn’t pricey, not suggesting it either but with everything there it’s likely to be a very easy swap (think wiring a large plug).

Thanks for that. The charger is unreliable. Since that successful charge, I can't get it to charge reliably.

When switched on, it does charge for maybe two minutes, then switches off. I did wonder whether the timing schedule is still active, but no.

I have a quote of nearly £900 to replace the charger. Much more than the original EO thing.

I may well search for a charger, maybe costing £500 ish, and do the swap myself...

Thanks for your thoughts...:)

How would you rate this Amazon Charger?
No idea about the quality of the brand. It looks like you can adjust the rate of charge at least. Useful if you wanted to set it to charge slower for longer for some reason.

It seems to do all the main things, but maybe a couple of smart things are missing:

Would you want one that would be able to do solar divert in the future?

Also one that a third party (like Octopus) could control on your behalf to optimise around spare/free/cheap renewable capacity?

Intelligent Octopus Go is the best tariff out there and only compatible with Zappi and Ohme at the moment, but other smart chargers (Givenergy I'm hoping) should be added in the future.

You could even get an Ohme pro supply only, for just over £500, wouldn't take a sparky long to wire it up, heck all your wiring is there

Yes, I have looked at the Ohme Home Pro. It fits the bill. Also will give access to Intelligent Octopus Go.

I would need to add a junction box to mate the existing cable to the Ohme.

Is it as easy as it sounds...?

Am I safe to do it as an unqualified sparky ?

I don't want to encourage unlicensed electrical work, but wiring in a replacement EVSE, to someone who knows the basics, is indeed easy.
We have an EO Pro, most of the guts were replaced under warranty last September, just two months within warranty. If it goes again (when), we will be replacing it with the Ohme Home Pro. I can/could do it myself, but is there some sort or 'engineer commission' that has to be done?

Yes, wiring it up is easy, but there are two extra wires, which I believe are sensors. And the new regulations (?) say that new Charger installations have to have these. They go back to the fuse box, I don't know what I have to do with them...

Thus, in the end, I am paying extra to have the whole thing installed by a professional...

That way, I have someone to blame...?

Whatever makes you feel happy. They are likely to be for a ct clamp (if you go back to the consumer unit you’ll likely see a plastic block clipped around the meter tails). They are there for 2 reasons mostly. To suck up excess solar and/or load limit the charger I.e if the supply is small or looped it can be specified by the DNO to ramp charge down when house load is high.
