I don't think anyone's stealing anything. NT has free (slow) chargepoints all over the place. They list them on their website!

Thanks for all the great advice. We drove 600 miles in total this weekend and topped up 3 times, all with no issue at all.
It used the Electroverse app on one of them to claim the free £10 they're offering at the moment. Other than that I found it easier to tap my credit card, which worked every time without hassle. I didn't find the Electroverse app very intuitive, as I managed to somehow minimise my charge progress, and then it seemed to disappear completely while the car continued to recharge.
Instavolt for me wasn't particularly quick, and was the most expensive, maybe due to the timing of the charge, and the fact I used card instead of the app.
But no hassles, just a slightly worrying time when we turned up at the McDonalds in Widnes to charge, with less than 10% charge to find no chargers. Turns out there's two McDonalds in Widnes a mile apart!
