Dear Community,
My partner and I came across a critical bug related to the MG4 EV keycard.

We managed by mistake to open and start a car that was not ours.

We suppose that the car was already unlocked, hence explaining how were able to go inside not noticing it wasn’t ours.
When we wanted to start the engine, the car said the card was not detected and we should proceed with the alternative start procedure. We put the keycard in the middle box and after 2-3 tries the car started.

After 2-3 min driving, we suddenly noticed it wasn’t our car. How crazy is this?

Of course we brought the car back and took ours instead.

I thought it would be relevant to let the MG EV 4 engineers know.

Have you informed MG, and what were their comment?

How can you possibly fail to recognise your own car
Same make, model and colour, parked roughly where you remembered, and you were able to get in the car without issue. (Everyone looks at the VRM plate to make sure it is their car?) 🤷‍♂️

The other day I parked in Lidl and locked it then got my bags out of the boot. I started to walk to the trolley stand and a newish Peugeot 205 came down and parked just further down than mine. At the trolley stand (30m ) for some reason I looked back and the occupants had just got out and were locking theirs via the key fob. As the indicators on theirs flashed so did the ones on mine??? My key fob was in my trouser pocket and both hands on the trolley . When I returned to the car 25 mins later it was still locked and absolutely fine. Forgot about it until this post.

I have a 23 model and never got a key card that is placed in a "middle box". Is this a new thing? I just get in and drive as long as key fob is in my pocket.

There is no keycard for the mg4. The middle box I would assume is the storage under the center arm rest, you would put your key there if the car fails to detect it in your pocket.

Jury's out on the OP's post but that could be because there's a good chance English isn't their first language.

As @ReintjeWA says the MG4 doesn't have a key card but that could be Google translate and they meant key fob.

The MG4 doesn't have an engine that needs starting.

As it was a rental car, we did not pay any particular attention. Was parked just next to ours.

How can I report it to MG?
This would really be helpful!
Thanks

You really need to drop this attitude mate. The vast majority of people who join a forum do so because they've encountered an issue with a product that the forum deals with.
Not an 'attitude' at all just pointing out facts and others have agreed with me.

How to contact MG:
I'm a little unsure if you actually have rented the car from a rental company (Herts, Avis, Europcar or the like). I guess knowing the special emergency start procedure and also taking the effort to join this forum (private forum, no MG personel here) indicates that you might have leased the car over a span of years, rather than rented it for days or weeks.
If it was leased you contact MG via the authorised dealer you got the car from. If it was rented contact the rental company (it is not entirely impossible that a rental company buying 100's of identical cars (they do that, I used to support such deals), wil have asked identical key fob' for ease of operation)

Hi!
Thanks for your reply but I think that neither of your suggested options is the accurate situation.

Yes it was a rental car for a weekend.
Yes we searched for the special emergency start on the internet.
And yes as this was an crazy experience we wanted to make MG know, hence we found this forum.

No, contacting the rental company would not make sense as this did not happened on the rentals company parking but on a random parking: the other car was definitely not a rental car (once we noticed, we noticed!)

Would really help if you could just provide me an idea on how to let MG know.

Thanks
