Damage to Side of ZS EV Red

Hi, after only one day our new red ZS EV was bumped by a V6 Toyota Landcruiser in the local car park.

The damage is to the rear left wheel hub area and side body. It did to look too serious initially but the local panel repair expert explained that the colour red uses quite special sprays and technologies. To get a complete match requires a complete re-spray of the entire side of the car. Plus odering new plastic wheel arch trims from MG to replace the scratched ones. Has anyone had a similar experience and needed to have a respray organised like this? If I could work out out to put up a picture I would add it to this link too. The panel repair specialist also could not locate the paint reference code on the vehicle or in the log books either.

Sorry about the damage. Metallic paint (and many solid colours) finishes cannot be ‘edge to edge’ repaired successfully in most cases - so blending paint across panels is used to ensure a better colour match. Without seeing your car it’s hard to say how this would be accomplished. It’s not unusual to have to paint out a side to achieve good colour matching.

That is a real shame on your first day out.
The colour on the car is Dynamic red and is a “Tri - Coat” finish.
MG have been using this colour for a while now, so it should be easy to track down ?.

Here's hoping the other vehicle's insurance is going to play fair.

I had my front wing caved in a few months back, but I left the insurance companies to sort it out. Pretty sure they only painted the wing and front valance, but I went for the black paint scheme, so...

Is this an MG approved paint shop?
I recently received damage to one of the rear doors on my Mondeo. After getting a silly repair cost I got a complete replacement door from eBay with a resultant perfect colour match. Just a thought.

Yes - thanks and pictures of offending vehicle. Apologies all round from driver responsible. My insurance company has confirmed it will take all the costs and deal with the matter and not impact our excess either. Apparently the paint code is RSJ.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, a similar thing happened to ours a couple of months ago.

The offside front wing and bumper corner were painted and colour matched by an approved MG body shop. They did not remove the bumper as they did not have the necessary equipment to set up and recalibrate the forward looking systems.

The delay we found was waiting for a new black plastic wheel arch trim which took a couple of days longer to arrive.

Open the drivers door, then look back to the “A” post where the door latches to the frame of the car.
Below the catch, there will be an indent label displaying the VIN number and the paint code of the car.

Hi - the youngest opened the rear passenger door and a gust of wind pulled it from her grasp and it slammed into the downpipe at the side of the house, after only having the car (also in red) for 3 weeks, causing a deep dent, near to the door edge.

A local bodyshop repairer fixed it and we had a similar conversation re re-painting. To assist blending in the colour, they had to re-paint both doors on that side of the car but they did an amazing job of blending in the colour and you cannot tell there had ever been a dent.

If you come up to Edinburgh, I can recommend them!

A local bodyshop repairer fixed it and we had a similar conversation re re-painting. To assist blending in the colour, they had to re-paint both doors on that side of the car but they did an amazing job of blending in the colour and you cannot tell there had ever been a dent.

If you come up to Edinburgh, I can recommend them!

Sorry - we're showing our age when you talk about the Datsun Sunny! My mate had one and I still remember running around with him driving and me, in the front with the windows down, thinking how cool we looked!

Paint mixing and matching / blending of colours has moved on a LONG way since then I am glad to say.
“Loosing” the colour on the adjacent panels to gain a perfect match has been second nature almost now.
When you paint just the affected panel from edge to edge and stand back, your eye can detect any slight difference in tint in the panel colours.
This because your eye’s will focus in on that panel and the shade difference is easy to spot.
By “Loosing” the base cost colour in the first 25% of the adjacent panels and then re finishing all affected panels in lacquer you eye is unable to pick out the different shade of blended colour.
It is still slightly out, but your eyes can not focus on an individual panel and pick out the slight colour difference.
It’s a bit of an optical illusion really !.
With all the fancy colours available on some models, this procedure has become almost the norm now.
It increases the cost of the repair, because you could finishing three panels instead of the one affected panel.
If done correctly, the repair should be undetectable.

I had virtually the same thing happen to my last car. A silver metallic Hyundai I20. It put a right crease in the edge of the door. The guy I took it to did an amazing job of both the crease and the colour match. It was impossible to detect. Once upon a time you couldn't match metallic for love or money but these days paint has changed so much.
