Dangerous unexpected braking!!

The trouble is that it is very hard to prove that it actually happened and the dealers may not find any faults. I hope that you get it sorted out.
A dash cam might capture the event, which would be proof.

Alisonwardbaptiste, did you have a dash cam running?

Hi just sat here in the garden enjoying a Bud and browsing through the forum, when I come across this thread about AEB and I’m thinking thank god my 5 SR has never had this fitted.

I have read here many time before about many different problems with MG pilot and AEB ACC LKA and whatever else as been fitted in the new cars and not just on MGs.

I hope there’s some way to disarm this lot for when I get my next EV as they all seem to be fitting this stuff to new models now, example the new MG4 no rear wiper no reversing camera no lights in the rear seats so passenger are snuggling to find seat belts slots and even worse trying to get small kids in the rear in the dark, ZS mk1&2 5SR and LR no rear Interior lighting, the new yet to come 5 has it now but not the 4 what are the designers doing I ask, I for one would much sooner have the rear wash wipe reversing camera and some lights in the back than all the other tech stuff above, just give me plain old Cruise control, plus wash and wipe to clean the rear widow so I can see what’s behind me clearly, and the rear camera to help with parking especially in a dark car park and they can keep the rest would also make the new cars a bit cheaper as well I would hope.
And before you all start screaming at me I know the 4 trophy spec has 360 cameras but for a lot of extra money.

Ok rant over time for another Bud but guys I wish you all good luck in getting this issue resolved as it appears to be quite common and could be even more dangerous than not having them at all.

Hello

I have had my ZS EV since April. I have had a few occasions when the brakes would come on momentarily at low speed. Today however, I was traveling at 40 mph when the brakes came on unexpectedly causing great alarm to me and the car behind! I had noticed that the information center (the little square screen between the speedometer and the power meter) would not toggle fully moments before. I have also noticed that sometimes the ACC won't engage. I have booked the car into the dealership for investigation. I wonder has this problem been experienced by anyone else? it is of course potentially very dangerous.

Hi

I have a MG ZS hybrid (2025 model).

I have experienced the same problem, twice in one week, luckily only travelling at 20mph (ish), and the brakes slam on. This really is quite dangerous.

Perhaps this is some kind of design fault, but will MG accept this?

There was a parked vehicle on my left on both occasions. And yes, it is a design fault, it obviously hasn't been tested properly, because it shouldn't happen. This was also a dangerous experience for the car behind me, who must have wondered why I had suddenly braked.

was that on a bendy road or were you passing very close to the parked car? if the car calculates that the position of the object in front and your speed are such that the collision is likely, the car will brake as it was supposed to do. I switched mine off as it does not suit my driving style - it braked when I calculated it was safe to squeeze at 30 mph pass the car turning left - objectively looking, exactly what it was supposed to do as I was speeding towards the car in front that was breaking.

Of course, it may be that your radar is misaligned and needs checking by MG garage.

Hi

Yes, the road was a long winding bend to the right, with vehicle parked on the left.

I didn't realise you could actually turn it completely off (I wonder if this would affect insurance?)

Today I have adjusted it to the lowest sensitivity setting, hoping that this will make a difference.

Previously, I had a Citroen C5 (manual, diesel). The active braking only ever deployed once, when I was on a motorway, and there was an accident between two lorries, and two cars. I couldn't believe how fantastic the system worked between the computer and brakes. I would never have been able to stop as well as the system did for me.

There is setting for the AEB sensitivity, default is high, selecting “moderate” (or whatever the legal people decided it should be called) may help here.

Phantom braking is always a risk with these systems that don’t have a wholistic full self driving view. The same goes for the lane follow assist; which thankfully can be fully turned off.

Ultimately, the trade off is that it’s better to have braked than not at all (which is the criticism from those that believe that the pedal error incidents are actually system failures). People should not be driving on the backsides of other cars so if you are phantom braking you shouldn’t be getting rear ended anyway.

All cars have this problem, even Teslas. If the road was curving to the right and a car was parked on the left, the radar would still be pointing straight ahead, right at the parked car. Page 212 of the owners manual.
