I’m about to pull the trigger on a new MG5 Trophy LR for Mrs M, and was wondering what other people’s experience has been in purchasing and/or having warranty/servicing done at any of the following:

  • Glyn Hopkin, Watford
  • Palmers, Hemel Hempstead
  • Bristol Street Motors, Beaconsfield

Cinderford MG, Gloucestershire gave me a great deal (delivered to my door) on my XPower but they’re mis-selling the 5 on Autotrader at present and quoting an extra £545 for black paint, over what’s advertised – so they’re out this time round.

Perrys, Aylesbury tried to force unwanted extras on me as condition of giving a semi-decent discount on an XPower when I was initially looking, which completely defeated the object, so not going back there…

My wild card at the moment is Bath MG who are in the same ballpark, but I’d have to travel to collect (they’ve stated collection in person only for better customer experience?) – not too big an issue as I have family in that direction anyway.

Concerns would be the dealer’s attitude towards customer service, general buying experience, if software updates done FOC as part of pre-delivery checks, quality of aftercare etc.

One person on here recommended the one in Reading for servicing.

Seemed a lot cheaper than Waylands (Oxford and Newbury), and closer to London.

Hope you get a good deal and Mrs M is very happy with her new waggon!

Not sure how close but Chiswick MG has always been good since I got the car 2 years ago from them.

It’s an hour drive through London for me but I still keep going back.

I just got a new LR Trophy from Bristol St at Beaconsfield. Overall a good experience but the salesperson IU was dealing with wasn't that great at initiating communications - I had to chase a lot which could have been avoided if she had been a bit more reactive. I didn't meet her on handover day but the manager and the salesman I did meet seemed pretty good so all in all I'd recommend them.

You missed some real bargains with brand new MG5 Trophies a couple of months back - I paid a little over £22k for one. I'm sure they've all gone now.

I bought one just last week, Trophy and metallic paint, £21k, so they're still out there to be had! I'm hard nosed and it did take a little pushing the dealer to make it happen though.

Would that be Reads, I go there for servicing after shite service from the one in Hull...

It is, although, who does my servicing is yet to be decided, as Read screwed over my father in law in an appalling way a few years back when he was suffering from the early stages of dementia, so was very easy to take advantage of. As a result I have zero loyalty to them, beyond getting the deal I wanted on a new car nearby. They're just a typical, horrible, corporate dealership. I may use NT Shaw in Louth for servicing, as they're an old school small family dealership, who seem to be very service focussed.

I would certainly like to hear how you get on with NT Shaw, as it's not much further than Grimsby from sunny Scunny..

I already used them a couple of years back to service my ZS EV, they seemed fine, much more old school and seemed more trust worthy than the sleazy big dealer chains, who I really don't like. I'm not a fan of using dealers at all for any work, as I have my own workshop and I'm an engineer with significant experience working on cars in general & EV's, so am more critical than most and frankly find main dealer mechanics to be generally mediocre. The new car warranty (or extortion racket!) ties you to them or some other Ltd company 3rd party service for the duration though if you want to maintain it!

Think I'm probably dealing with the same person at Beaconsfield but not getting any bad vibes (XPower pun intended) and they're nearer than the others, if there are any early issues. Did they do software/map updates for you as part of PDI and any experience with Tesla charging yet?

I'm being told stock is running very low and not much beyond White/Black/Silver currently available. That's fine as after a black one. Had various discussions with dealers advertising either black specifically or 'any colour' at £21k mark but then have added £595 for paint choice which, in my view, is abject mis-selling - however, Beaconsfield came up with a good Black Friday offer via CarWow and then knocked a bit more off to price-match. So I'm in a situation where all the dealers under consideration are in the same ballpark and it comes down to simply taking a view of who I think will be the most hassle-free in terms of customer service & aftercare etc.

Yes, there's still some good prices out there and opportunity to squeeze some dealers a little further. Out of curiosity what charge lead(s) came with yours?

Buy from the one that gives best deal, service at one you prefer, pick and mix.

I didn't have bad vibes as such, just seemed to have trouble getting info when I wanted it. Maybe I'm too impatient :-)

I only asked about the Tesla update, as that's the only one I know of, and I've not yet had time to try it out. The maps weren't updated but I have them on a USB to do when it's a bit warmer!!

Good for those of you finding the deal still available. It's a blinding price for a great car!!

Fair enough! Bath MG have specifically stated they do all updates incl maps under PDI but everyone else seems a bit vague.

Agreed, price is amazing value - Having to move fast now to close a deal, as not many left!

Did 'granny' / type 2 cables come with yours?

I've actually no idea yet! I pick it up on Saturday. I'm assuming it will at least have the granny, unless they've took it out to spite me for pushing such a hard bargain! :ROFLMAO:

Couldn’t make it up! After a week’s back ‘n forth in discussions with Bristol St MG, Beaconsfield and thinking everything was tied down, they turned around and declared they couldn’t honour the price-match previously agreed and I’d have to pay extra for black paint (for which I had two other similar prices). After a bit of a scramble (and being told MG UK stock was showing down to just eight left in black), managed to place an order with MG Bath - expecting it inside two weeks…
